There’s always intrigue in a young big man, but there’s always skepticism as well when it comes to success at an early age. Is he just doing it because he’s bigger than everyone else? Will he continue to improve moving forward? What’s his ceiling when it’s all said and done?
While some of these questions linger with St. Anne’s Belfield sophomore Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA , one thing you can’t question is how hard he plays and how much he produces. Lang came in to the CBG ECE 24 Camp just looking for an opportunity to get seen and play, since his high school season was canceled, and he brought that attitude into both the drills and the games.
“I’m really just trying to get some exposure,” Lang said. “Covid has been really tough, our season got canceled and I just want to get the opportunity to showcase my skills to college coaches.”
Lang not only got that opportunity, but took full advantage of it as he led the camp in rebounds and showcased his offensive skillset, and reaped the benefits as he picked up an offer from Ole Miss of the SEC, one of the schools tuned in to the live stream. Lang got off to a slow start offensively, but he continued to play with a high motor and pursue the basketball on both ends, and he was rewarded in the second game when he went for a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Lang’s inside-out style is what makes him very intriguing, along with the obvious size and motor that he plays with, and he’s really improved on his ability to not only bury guys int he post and work on the glass, but also in his ability to step out and play on the perimeter as well.
“I can attack well in the post and I’m also pretty crafty on the perimeter,” he said. “I’m also really good in pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pops too, I’m able to make some plays.
To go along with his offer he picked up from Ole Miss, Lang holds three other early offers from Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and ODU. The secret is out on the big man, as he says schools that have been in contact with his people include Wichita State, George Washington, Indiana and Michigan.
As to why he believes coaches should watch him moving forward and recruit him, it all has to do with his approach to the game and the pride he takes in his game when he’s on the floor.
“I give 100% effort all the time and I’m the guy who will dive on the floor and make winning plays. I’m able to command a floor and get people to where they need to be, and I hold my teammates accountable.”
Lang works as hard when he’s not in camps and games as he does when he is, as he’s a guy who is always in the gym and a very high academic student as well. Even when you question his foot speed or athleticism, every time he’s on the floor he finds ways to produce and produce at a high level, and that’s what the college coaches have loved about him so far.
He’ll be interesting to watch develop moving forward, but I expect him to be a hot commodity playing with Team Loaded VA on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit this summer.
