In a camp that featured so much high level talent from multiple areas, it’s very difficult for any freshman to be able to compete no matter how talented they are. However, not every freshman is Cameron Scott Cameron Scott 6'6" | SG Lexington | 2024 State #23 Nation SC , who recently received an invitation to a USA Basketball camp as well.
Scott, who is widely considered the best young prospect in South Carolina, came in to the camp wanting to just improve and compete against other talented guys than he’s used to.
“I’m just trying to get better today and play where the talent is,” Scott said. “I haven’t really been up here for anything, I stay more down south, so this is something new for me.”
Scott wasted no time making an impact in his freshman year at Lexington High School, quickly taking the reigns as the best player on his team and leading them to the state playoffs before Covid protocols canceled their season. The young prospect led his team averaging 16.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.6 steals per game, and he was hitting his stride at the right time as he was averaging 23.3 points and 12.3 rebounds in his last four games.
“My freshman year went pretty great, it could have gone better,” he was quick to say. “I personally think we got robbed out of our state championship appearance, and Covid kind of messed everything up, but we just have to keep working to get better next year.”
While Scott holds an early offer from Winthrop, which is very impressive for just a freshman, there are some big time schools that have him on the radar already. Scott’s high school coach says he’s been contacted by Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina, Texas Tech and others.
While he’s experienced a lot of success early and the sky is the limit for him, Scott knows that things won’t be given to him, and he needs to continue to improve in multiple facets of the game to get where he needs to get moving forward.
“I need to continue to work at game speed, keep getting my teammates involved and keep playing hard.”
What separates Scott from other talented players isn’t just his size, athleticism and skill set, but it’s also his understanding of the game and attention to detail at such an early age. At 6’4” he’s a true point guard and showed that he can make good reads and run the show with other talented players on his team, as he finished top 3 in the camp in assists at 4 per game. He showed flashes of brilliance on the defensive end, and he’s likely still growing which will be scary if he does. In a couple of years, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was the best player in a camp like this.
