Ward came into the ECE 24 Camp with the rest of his New World team with one thing on his mind, and when I asked him what he was looking forward to doing at the camp he kept it very simple, prove he was the best.
“I’m looking forward to really competing with other high level guys and trying to show that I’m as talented as they are, even better,” Ward said.
He wasted no time doing just that, as he played in the first game and got out of the gates hot scoring his team’s first eight points, and showing that he has the total package on the wing. He scored the ball with ease from multiple levels, he made great reads in the pick-and-roll scenarios, he defended multiple positions and set the tone early that he was one of the best players in the building. He finished the first game going for 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field, with 4 rebounds and 3 assists to go along with it.
Ward plays on one of the most historic and recognized programs in the country in DeMatha, and very rarely do you come in as a freshman and make a major impact at a program like that. However, he showed flashes his sophomore season, and in their abbreviated season this year he was one of their top players and one of the top in all of the DMV. He recently moved up to a top 50 ranked prospect by Rivals, and while it’s been a long time coming he says he’s put the work in to get there.
“Just getting serious about my craft and getting in the weight room and really getting stronger,” he said. “I’ve always felt like I’ve had the skills, but just improving and adapting my strength to get to the next level has been the biggest factor really.”
Ward holds a slew of offers from high major programs across the country, but mentioned Georgetown, Georgia, LSU, Seton Hall and Indiana as the schools that have built the best relationships with him. He says he’s heard recently from a number of new schools including UNC, Michigan, Illinois and Maryland.
Ward hasn’t scheduled any visits yet due to Covid restrictions but says he’ll look into that this summer. As far as what it will take for him to commit to a school, it’s all about where he feels welcome the most.
“I want a school that will give me a sense of family, much like I’ve felt in my time at DeMatha.”
While some schools have recognized Ward’s potential early on, I fully expect him to see even more of a blow up this summer playing on the Adidas Gauntlet with New World. He’s an all-around wing that brings it on both ends of the floor, he impacts the game in almost every way imaginable and the way that he has improved already makes me think he will only continue to improve at the next level.
