One of the best parts about having a camp like this is getting to see new kids from different areas than where I’m from (Virginia), and even better is when you get to see a kid who is way under the radar from a different area. If there was one kid who fit that mold at the CBG ECE 24 Camp, it was sophomore guard Kenny Jackson Kenny Jackson 6'3" | PG #23 Nation PA out of Pennsylvania.
Jackson is someone I had heard somewhat about, and everything I heard was that he is as under the radar as they come despite a couple of high level offers already. That seemed like a stretch to me, but it didn’t take long for me to understand what people were saying was 100% true.
When Jackson came, I asked him what he was trying to get out of the camp and he told me he wants to prove himself to high major coaches against the best.
“I’m trying to get more exposure to high major coaches and coaches that are interested in me,” Jackson said. “I’m trying to prove that I can be a three level player that can get it done in the paint, in the midrange and from three. I’m working on my point guard skills, finding open teammates and making the right play.”
It didn’t take long for Jackson to show his mix of athleticism, skill set and ability to impact the game at the point guard spot on both ends of the floor. He’s dynamic off the bounce as he has great burst and thrives in transition, he showed he can shoot it from deep and in the midrange and made some great passes and reads to make others better as well. Throughout the camp we were saying he was probably the biggest stock riser in our eyes, and that it was only a matter of time before he was going to blow up on the national scene.
While Jackson only holds a few offers right now, the secret is starting to get out as he’s been receiving recent interest from a number of high level schools including Virginia Tech, Xavier, Maryland, Georgetown, Miami and more.
As far as what Jackson thinks he needs to improve on, it’s just continuing to hone his craft and turning himself into more of a true point guard.
“I think I need to command the floor and be a floor general,” he said. “Get my teammates in the right spot and find them so the whole offense flows easier.”
One thing that stood out about Jackson outside of his dynamic ability with the ball in his hands is the way that he competes. He has a toughness to him on both ends of the floor, and wants to matchup with the best and show that he is better than the guys that are talked about more than him.
He believes this attitude is one of the main reasons that college coaches should recruit him moving forward.
“I’m a dog. I like to win, I hate losing! I’ll do whatever it takes to win, if that means scoring 30 points, if that means sharing the ball and getting 15 assists, getting rebounds it doesn’t matter I’ll do it all.”
Jackson is, in my eyes, on the border of being a nationally ranked player once the right people see him, and he’ll have that opportunity this summer playing on the 17U UAA Circuit with WeR1, one of the top programs on that shoe circuit. With their pedigree of getting the top players in the Philly area seen, I fully expect Jackson to become one of the hottest recruited players in the mid-atlantic this summer.
