Continue ReadingThe Commonwealth Basketball Group put together their East Coast Elite 24 Camp, which brought together some of the top prospects from across the east coast to train with and compete against each other for college coaches on a live stream. The event brought together players from NJ, PA, MD, WV, DC, VA, NC and SC, and was a super high level and talented event with kids that were eager to compete and play hard against each other.
There wasn’t a dud in the group, and here we take a look at the top guards from the event.
Quadir Copeland | 6’6” | Life Center Academy (NJ) 2022
Copeland, who is from Pennsylvania but plays in NJ, turned the camp on its head with his playmaking and passing ability as he made highlight reel pass after pass and showed that he can score it when he needs to as well. While I usually don’t all guys his size a true point guard, Copeland has a tremendous feel for the game and sees the game a play or two ahead of others, and on top of that he plays with a mix of flash and substance that makes him a fun player to watch but also a tremendously effective playmaker that can make pretty much every pass in the book and will add a little swag to whatever he’s doing. He has terrific size and showed his ability to make shots, but he thrived as a playmaker whether it was in transition, in the half court or in pick-and-rolls. He finished the camp averaging 8.5 points, 8.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Devin Ceaser Devin Ceaser 6'1" | CG St. Stephen's & St. Agnes | 2022 State VA | 6’1” | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes (VA) 2022
Ceaser was one of the guys we invited hoping he could show that he belongs with the best, and he solidified our beliefs as he competed with the best and showed that he was one of the best athletes in attendance with a number of high major guys there. He’s a lightning quick guard that has great end-to-end speed, he can stop on a dime and pull up or he can change directions and get in the lane at will where he can make plays for others or get to the rim where he can finish through traffic or above the rim. He’s a two way impact guy that can who brings great energy and intensity, and still has room to get better moving forward. The combo guard finished as the second highest scorer in the camp at 17 points per game, and he shot 60% from the field and 56% from deep with 2.5 steals per game.
Saxby Sunderland Saxby Sunderland 6'2" | CG Flint Hill | 2022 State VA | 6’3” | Flint Hill (VA) 2022
Ceaser’s backcourt mate on New World, Sunderland was another guy out of NOVA we wanted to invite to show he belonged and he stepped up to the challenge and was electric as both a scorer and playmaker throughout the event. Sunderland isn’t quite as dynamic as guys like Ceaser, but he’s a smooth combo guard that can play both on and off the basketball, he can score it easily from all three levels and has a terrific feel for the game on both ends of the floor. He’s a guy who is efficient and doesn’t go through long cold streaks, and can take over games with his scoring ability. He finished the event averaging 12 points and 4 assists per game.
Kanye Clary Kanye Clary 5'11" | PG Massanutten | 2022 State VA | 5’11” | Massanutten (VA) 2022
When it comes to pure floor generals, Clary was among the best in the camp along with a few others on this list, as he’s a guy who can pretty much get where he wants to on the floor and is consistently making plays with the ball in his hands. Clary is a wizard with the ball in his hands as he has a great handle that he keeps on a string and can embarrass defenders, he changes speeds and directions extremely well and can get in the lane at will and he has a package of floaters and pull-ups to negate his size. He didn’t shoot it particularly well to star the camp but he still showed his terrific vision and playmaking ability as he found guys in great positions to be successful and was one of the top assist guys in the camp at 4 per game.
Kenny Jackson Kenny Jackson 6'3" | PG #23 Nation PA | 6’3” | Academy of New Church (PA) 2023
Another of the Pennsylvania guys that came down for the camp, Jackson may have been the biggest stock riser as he showed he has top 100 talent level and was in attack mode and as efficient as they come throughout the camp. A powerful and athletic guard, Jackson has a blend of strength, bounce and skill that makes him very tough to guard, and he brings it on the defensive end as well as he can do pretty much everything you want out of a lead guard. He has terrific burst with the ball in his hands, he’s a dynamic and strong finisher at and above the rim and he showed the ability to make shots from multiple levels and make plays for others as well. He finished the camp averaging 15 points per game, shooting 76% from the field and should have a major blowup this summer on the UA Circuit.
John St. Germain John St. Germain 6'2" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’1” | STAB (VA) 2023
St. Germain is a throwback style guard in the mold of an Andre Miller type, as he is a floor general and always under control that can get to his spots and make plays without being the most athletic guy on the court. He is highly skilled with the ball in his hands as he has great fundamentals and changes speeds and directions well, he is an ambidextrous finisher with good body control and enough strength to finish through contact and he understands the game well beyond his years. While he isn’t going to wow you on either end with highlights or athleticism, he will find ways to make positive impacts on both ends of the floor. He picked up an offer from Georgetown after his play in the event!
Cameron Scott Cameron Scott 6'6" | SG Lexington | 2024 State #23 Nation SC | 6’4” | Lexington HS (SC) 2024
While it’s tough for freshmen to really standout at such a high level event, Scott showed tons of potential moving forward and showed why he’s considered one of the top young prospects in the Carolinas. A young guard with good size, Scott is skilled in a number of ways but it’s his mind and the way that he thinks the game that really stood out as he played with great poise and made the right play on regularly on both ends. He’s a good athlete that’s likely still growing, and in a couple of years it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up being the best player in an event like this. He finished as a top 3 assist guy at 4.5 assists per game.
Zion Collins | 6’2” | Hillside HS (NC) | 2024
Collins is another promising freshman from the Carolinas that showed flashes of brilliance as he’s a supremely athletic combo guard that thrives in transition when he can get downhill. He’s likely still growing and that’s scary as he showed terrific above the rim finishing ability in the skills and drills part of the event, he showed the ability to take contact and finish through traffic and he can play and guard both guard positions. He’ll be very interesting to watch continue to develop moving forward and should become a household name.
