High School Basketball tipped off in Western New York in mid-February 2021. This article will touch on how the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Hawks have started their season.
St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute – 10-0 Overall
After two and a half weeks, the lone undefeated team remaining is St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. A perfect 10-0 with an average margin of victory of 18.9 points, the Hawks have cemented themselves as the team to beat in the Monsignor Martin League.
One player who is off to an impressive start is Senior Guard Andrew Whitehead. The 5’10” shifty guard is a capable ballhandler that can off the bench and play in major spurts. Whitehead is a calming force on the floor, often communicating with and directing his teammates to the right spots. Whitehead’s season-high in minutes played came in the opener, where he was on the floor for nearly half the game.
Just a sophomore, Sam Greco has found his way into the rotation, mainly through his heads-up defense. Though he plays Point Guard, he has a knack for challenging jumpshooters and plays at the rim. What’s more, he is one of the most underappreciated steal-men in the conference. In his second game of the year, he stole the ball six times! Greco will continue to come in off the bench to provide instant energy and defensive intensity in the Hawk backcourt as the season delves on.
On a team full of quality guards, Amaree Knox has solidified an important role as one of the team’s prolific big men. Splitting time at both the Power Forward and Center position, he uses his strength to body opposing players. On offense, he creates mismatches by stepping out and shooting from the perimeter, forcing the player guarding him to chase outside the paint. So far this season, every single shot Knox has taken has been from deep; he and his team alike would benefit from mixing it up and diversifying his shot selection.
