The group at Tribe ATL, headed by coach Lee Martin, is a fun potpourri of interchangeable parts all mostly hovering around 6-0 give or take, yet the versatility to score at multiple levels and the skillset of these hybrid/combos has the chance to make up for any lack of real size in the division.
Here are a few from Wednesday night who made an impression:
David Culbreath, CG, Homeschooled
Culbreath embodies that hybrid look as much as anyone on this club. He showed a real comfort playing the 1, but has such a solid 3-point stroke he may be more effective coming off the wing where he can get downhill with speed and craftiness to the rim. Like everyone on this roster, he guards and pressures you as part of Coach Lee’s plan, so if you like sound defense look to this 2024 to watch.
Corey Gatling II, CG, Grayson
The Grayson guard factory rolls along with this sleek mover who gets from A to B with a fluid, gliding smoothness. Possesses a natural basketball player’s moxie out there, things appear almost too easy for him, which can lead to lapses, but when he turns it up there isn’t anyone on this superb defensive roster than can contain him off the dribble, and he adds a 3-point dimension that when harnessed into his full game will have him staking a high spot on rankings boards all over the Metro.
Xavier Singleton, SG, Providence Christian (pictured above)
Coach Joey Thacker over in Lilburn I know must be thrilled to have this 2024 riser in the fold, who brings great energy and intelligence to a game that is deadly from 3-land and powerful to the hole when attacking from anywhere on the perimeter. He’s vocal, sound in all aspects, and like the two above will quickly find himself rising up ours and other rankings boards after what’s expected to be a productive summer for this wing.
Cameron Thornton, PG, Lanier
Love the mix of schools on this roster, and after seeing Lanier a fair amount this past season I’m enamored with the young talent they have on the way. Thornton, along with CJ Hyland CJ Hyland 6'0" | PG Grayson | 2024 State GA and Jayce Nathaniel Jayce Nathaniel 6'7" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2024 State AZ , comprises just a small portion of that, and Thornton brings a true point guard’s mentality to this team of hybrid slashers. He has a terrific handle, a real burst on the opening dribbles, yet also a great poise in the halfcourt to wait for the right moment to deal or attack. Excited to see him mix with the bevy of options Tribe has at its disposal.
Hunter Amick, SG, Brookwood
All successful teams need glue guys, but in Amick’s case, he not only is the mortar for this group but has plenty of ability to be the brick as well. He complements whoever he’s playing alongside so well his contributions might get lost, but what might not show up on a stat sheet will be evident to the trained eye – high IQ decision-making, sound defense, heady play in the halfcourt, and timely scoring with his comfortable stroke. I think as the season wears on and team’s attempt to cut off the above 4 guards, Amick will be the beneficiary and open some eyes.
