As the classification made up of schools with the largest enrollments in the state, the 5A tournament is always a wonder to behold and a lot of great talent is produced from this level. Across the state, 5A teams have done an excellent job of showing their resiliency this year and a couple of surprise contenders have emerged . Along with this, a lot of high level basketball has been played with many teams proving their worth and hoping to make a postseason run. Joe Mpoyo Joe Mpoyo 6'4" | SG Meridian | 2021 State ID , Meridian: Joe had a really impressive season for the Meridian Warriors as they finished their regular season second in the 5A SIC. Mpoyo shot the ball from downtown at a blistering rate and also showed his ability to get to the rim and finish tough layups around the basket. Joe dished out a lot of assists and grabbed a lot of rebounds as well during his time on the floor and emerged as one of Meridian’s top options throughout the season. Mpoyo is also a stopper on the defensive end and routinely blocks opposing players’ shots as well as diving through passing lanes.
Blake Buchanan Blake Buchanan 6'10" | PF Lake City | 2023 State #172 Nation ID , Lake City: One of the best young talents from the state of Idaho, Blake made a splash this season after transferring to the 5A level. At 6’9″, Blake has shown his versatility and ability to shoot from outside and play back to the basket basketball. Buchanan is a tremendous shot blocker and he also rebounds with the best of them. Buchanan has a really bright future as long as he continues to work hard and expand his game for the coming seasons. Watch for Blake to be one of the best players in the state by the time he is a senior.
