Donnavin Hinsz Donnavin Hinsz 6'6" | PF Columbia Heights | 2022 State MN (6’6 2022 F, Columbia Heights)- Perhaps the unsung hero from Columbia Heights’ win over DeLaSalle, Donnavin was simply outworking everyone in the paint. Offensively he was constantly creating second chance points with both his physical tools of size, strength, and explosivness, and also with his will to win. Donnavin was also able to score by cutting hard to the basket and powering up through traffic to score. Defensively he was locking up both inside and out, using his strength to defend on the block and his impressive quickness to cause difficulties for a Division One signed player on the wing. Finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Davon Townley Jr Davon Townley Jr 6'6" | PF Minneapolis North | 2021 State MN . (6’6 2021 PF, Minneapolis North)- Speaking of players who dominated in the paint, Davon Townley proved to be too much to handle in a win over Minneapolis South. The dual sport athlete is simply too strong for most high school posts to defend, and at times he was scoring with sheer strength and touch around the basket. His explosive second leap allowed him to gather offensive rebounds or elevate to receive a pass and then quickly get back in the air to finish. Davon added in two impressive dunks on his way to 18 points and 16 rebounds.
Tommy Humphries Tommy Humphries 6'5" | SF Totino-Grace | 2023 State #283 Nation MN (6’5 2023 W, Totino-Grace)- Tommy continues to prove why he’s one of the most versatile prospects in the 2023 class, as he did a little of everything in a win over Blaine. At 6’5 he has plenty of length on the wing, and is capable of scoring inside and out while guarding multiple spots defensively. Against Blaine he found success moving his feet and using his length to provide disruptive defense against shorter guards. Offensively he hit a pull-up jumper and also got to the rim for some tough finishes. One of the things that stands out most about Tommy is his passing ability, as he’s able to attack off the dribble and then dish off a last second pass to an open teammate around the basket. He finished with 14 points in the win, matching his season high.
Eddie Beeninga Eddie Beeninga 6'1" | PG Wayzata | 2021 State MN (6’1 2021 G, Wayzata)- With a starting lineup full of players that can take over on any given night, it was Eddie who paved the way with 23 points in a win over Edina. The senior guard is simply too quick off the dribble for most high school defenders to stop, as he proved lethal attacking the basket and finishing in a variety of ways for his 23 points. He excels at extending and quickly getting off the lay-up before a shot blocker can slide over to contest, but he’s also able to recognize when an opposing post gets to the spot in time in order to lay off a last second pass. Eddie also hit a high percentage of his open looks from beyond the arc.
Brady Helgren Brady Helgren 6'8" | C Edina | 2022 State MN (6’9 2022 PF/C, Edina)- Now standing at 6’9, Brady has the look of a player that scholarship schools will want to watch closely over the next year. Against Wayzata his outside shot wasn’t falling like it usually does, so Brady adjusted and started to go to work on the block on his way to 20 points. You can tell that he really put in work over the offseason, as his post footwork looks vastly improved and he was a danger to score when left isolated on the block. Helgren was also working hard on the glass on both ends, creating a few second chance buckets offensively. If he continues to progress, he could be a dangerous player in the Lake Conference for the next 1.5 seasons.
Chiang Ring (6’8 2024 F, Minneapolis South)- Part of a loaded freshman class at South, Chiang Ring is a difference maker on both ends of the floor. He has long arms, gets off the floor quickly, and has excellent timing as a shot blocker, a role that he should excel at over the next four years. Offensively he looks to bring down the rim every chance he gets, as he shows no fear going up through contact and trying to score with power against upperclassmen. Chiang had an impressive put-back dunk in traffic, and also elevated for a dunk after catching a pass on a strong baseline cut. Chiang finished with 10 points while also providing a strong rebounding presence against Minneapolis North.
Hassan Kamara Hassan Kamara 6'4" | SG Columbia Heights | 2022 MN (6’4 2022 W, Columbia Heights)- Hassan got off to a cold start shooting the ball in the first half, but made up for it with a monster performance defensively. Hassan drew three offensive fouls, forced a jump ball on the perimeter, and was creating loose balls all night as his defensive effort is just on another level. That defensive energy helped spark a strong second half, where at one point Hassan hit two 3’s and had an assist all within about a minute of play. His finish to the game offensively helped put Columbia Heights ahead of DeLaSalle, and they were able to hold onto the win. Hassan finished with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals in the win.
