Centreville officially won the 6A state title with a hard-fought win over a well-coached Potomac squad on Saturday night. The Wildcats claimed a share of the title last year before the season was halted due to the pandemic. Chris Kuzemka Chris Kuzemka 5'11" | PG Centreville | 2021 State VA , who sat out last year due to injury, emerged as the catalyst for Centreville this year. The gritty lead guard is planning to walk-onto the football team at Virginia Tech, but rumor has it that he’s looking for an opportunity to sign a D1 scholarship for basketball. There’s no doubt that in a standard recruiting climate he would have multiple suitors at that level.
The DC Cadets youth movement was alluded to in our previous wrap-up, but it’s worth another mention. One guy who is growing in stature, both physically and figuratively, is Raymond Watts Raymond Watts 6'4" | SG St. John's | 2023 State MD . He is one of Coach Behan’s top defensive stoppers. Watts plays with an unrelenting motor and uses his length shrewdly to be disruptive.
Now seems like a good time to throw another reminder out there that the pool of talent in 2021 from this area remains deep. Afamdi Achufusi Afamdi Achufusi 6'4" | SF Sidwell Friends | 2021 State MD is a division-one caliber defender in part because he’s switchable. He can guard 1-5 with no problem because of his physicality, toughness, and intelligence.
Cam Gillus Cam Gillus 5'10" | PG Sidwell Friends | 2023 State MD is reinforcing his credentials as a top guard in the local 2023 class. He’s got all the tools. Gillus makes a difference on both ends of the floor. He’s solid at the point of attack defensively. Gillus is a reliable playmaker and a three-level scorer who will only continue to improve as he learns how to lead and assume full control.
