Continue ReadingWe continue our class ranking updates as we move to Sophomores. The 2023 class is DEEP with talent, especially in the guard spots. Here’s a breakdown of the top 10:
Reed Sheppard Reed Sheppard 6'3" | PG North Laurel | 2023 State #22 Nation KY , North Laurel – The star of the high school season so far, Sheppard has mad headlines all over the state thanks to his outrageous scoring numbers and highlight reel dunks. Reed is a high major prospect with the statistics to back it up and recently got his first high major offer from Iowa.
Kaleb Glenn Kaleb Glenn 6'7" | SF La Lumiere | 2023 #64 Nation IN , Male – Kaleb is a top 50 player in the country in some national rankings and deserves all the praise he gets. At 6’7 and built like a pro wrestler, Glenn is a bully forward who continues to add to his skill set as his game develops. He’s a hot name with high major coaches and deservedly so.
Cyr Malonga Cyr Malonga 6'10" | C Evangel Christian | 2023 State KY , Evangel Christian – The international man of mystery, Malonga has yet to be declared eligible by the KHSAA so he hasn’t touched the court this season. He had a ton of hype this past season but hasn’t been able to back it up yet this season. Stay tuned to see if he gets eligible or has to wait until AAU to play again.
Gabe Sisk Gabe Sisk 6'5" | SG Ballard | 2023 #232 Nation CA-N , Ballard – The latest recipient of an offer, Sisk is a crafty combo guard who can play on or off the ball but is wired to score. Gabe has good positional size and can guard multiple positions on the court. He could have a chance to see his recruiting blow up this summer.
Grant Whitaker Grant Whitaker 6'3" | PG Murray | 2023 State KY , Murray – Grant is not a name a lot of people know around Kentucky because he plays for a Class A school in the first region but he is a no doubt D1 player and Kennesaw State offered last summer. Whitaker is a super efficient scorer who can push his ceiling even higher if he becomes a 40+% shooter from 3.
George Washington III George Washington III 6'3" | CG Chaminade Julienne | 2023 State #92 Nation OH , CAL – Another high scoring point guard, Washington is playing with the ball in his hands for 32 minutes per game and helped CAL to a better start than the last few seasons. Washington is athletic and has tremendous feel for the game. Should get multiple D1 offers as soon as this summer.
Dallas Roberts Dallas Roberts 6'1" | PG North Oldham | 2023 State KY , North Oldham – Dallas is another player who does more damage with his IQ and playmaking than he does by bullying defenders. Dallas is a great shooter but is not strictly a shooter as he can get into the paint and is a crafty finisher. As he keeps adding bulk, he’ll be an even better finisher through contact.
Hayden Llewellyn Hayden Llewellyn 6'2" | CG Corbin | 2023 State KY , Corbin – The third player on this list who was not a Kentucky resident this time last year, Hayden is very athletic and tries to dunk everything he can. He can also play on or off the ball as he is shooting almost 40% from three on the season. Llewellyn is a tough guard who should draw college offers soon.
Jacob Meyer Jacob Meyer 6'2" | PG Holy Cross Covington | 2023 #170 Nation GA , Covington Holy Cross – Jacob could go anywhere between 4 and 12 on the list depending on how well he’s shooting the ball when you see him play. Meyer is very athletic and a gifted slasher who can play solid defense across multiple positions but he needs to continue to improve as a shooter to move up this talented list of guards.
Jaylen Davis Jaylen Davis 6'5" | SF Madison Central | 2023 State KY , Madison Central – A big, long wing who continues to grow, Jaylen has as much long term potential as anyone in the class thanks to his huge wingspan and high athleticism. Davis has to continue developing a midrange game as right now it’s all 3s or layups for him.
