Here’s a look at some of the standouts from the weekend:
Joe Berry Joe Berry 6'4" | CG Washburn Rural | 2021 State KS , senior, Washburn Rural:
Berry faced tough Centennial League opponents in back-to-back nights, facing Emporia’s workhorse Charles Snyder Charles Snyder 6'5" | PF Emporia | 2021 State KS , then being called on to guard Manhattan’s Owen Braxmeyer Owen Braxmeyer 6'1" | CG Manhattan | 2021 State KS . Berry was up to the test, leading the Junior Blues to wins in both. Berry tossed in 15 against Emporia, then 19 against Manhattan.
Jack Hutchinson Jack Hutchinson 6'1" | CG Washburn Rural | 2021 State KS , senior, Washburn Rural:
Not to be outdone by Berry, Hutchinson showed just how deadly he can be against Emporia. He connected on 9-11 from the field, including five 3-pointers to score 23. He topped that off with 11 more points, including three more triples, against Manhattan.
Jahmir Kingcannon, sophomore, Highland Park:
The Scots used a very balanced attack to defeat Hayden, and sophomore Kingcannon is becoming ever more important to the cause. The 6-foot-3 forward continued to show his touch from the perimeter, dropping four 3-pointers en route to 12 points in the victory.
Elijah Brooks Elijah Brooks 6'3" | CG Topeka West | 2022 State KS , junior, Topeka West:
Not enough has been written about the Chargers star guard this season. Injuries continue to interrupt his season. And though Topeka West continues to roll, they will be limited come playoff time unless Brooks can get it all back together. He looked like his old self on Friday in a demolishing of Seaman. The junior hit 10-14 from the field, including an impressive ally-oop dunk, to finish with 21. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best guards in the Topeka area.
BJ Canady, freshman, Topeka High:
In this pandemic weirdness, the Trojans had to face Junction City in back to back nights. Topeka High lost the first, but got revenge in the second contest, in part due to a coming out party for freshman Canady and senior Jayden Leesman. Canady is a monstrous 6-foot-4 freshman who has been thrust into the quarterback role in football and post in basketball as a rookie. He had his best game yet Saturday with 14 in the win over the Blue Jays.
Jayden Leesman, senior, Topeka High:
Leesman waited his turn as the Topeka High class of 2020 dominated the Capital City sports scene for years. With those guys finally gone, Leesman has gradually asserted himself as one of the better guards in the city. He’s had a couple of games in double figures this season, but he exploded for 23 against Junction City on Saturday.
Mateo Hyman Mateo Hyman 6'2" | CG Seaman | 2022 State KS , junior, Seaman:
Hyman has been slowed by injuries all season. But he finally got to show what he can do in a loss to Topeka West on Friday. The junior broke out with 22 points, including four 3-pointers.
Nate Pewe, junior, Shawnee Heights:
There weren’t many highlights in the loss to Free State Friday, but the 6-foot-3 junior had some nice plays. He connected on 4-5 from the field and 3-3 from the line for a season high 12 points.
