Made 3-pointers – Enderlin 5 Oak Grove 12
The Grovers started the game hot with a 10-0 lead and won the first quarter by 6 points. Enderlin restored the balance in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 3-point lead. Both teams put up 20-points in the 3rd quarter. The Hurlburt brothers scored all but 1 point for the Eagles in the 4th. Oak Grove made it interesting down the stretch with some 3-pointers and a few turnovers. At the end of the game, the Eagle’s size and offensive rebounding were too much for the Grovers. Oak Grove kept it close because of their great effort on defense with taking charges and forcing player control fouls. I have not heard how many they took, but it must be close to double digits. Martinson was unreal shooting from beyond the arc tonight! Enderlin was tough on the O-boards, they scored many points off second chances.
Here are the top players from tonight’s game:
1. Mason Martinson Mason Martinson 5'11" | PG Oak Grove | 2021 State ND (2021) |5-11 G| Oak Grove – 8 triples and 2-2 from the line. Mason put on a shooting performance in this one. Wow was that impressive. He only needs a breath of fresh air to get his shot off. He does the work before the ball gets to him, his feet and shot release are lightning quick. Four of his 3-pointers tonight were very deep. He made them from way out on the wing from college and NBA depth. Mason made a pull-up 3-pointer from the left-wing out by the volleyball line. His other triples game from running off screens into the corner or the low wing. He must be in great shape because the defense could not stay with him. I like how he spots up on the wing and corners in transition. Keep an eye on #20 in the playoffs, he can single-handedly take over a game.
2. Gus Hurlburt Gus Hurlburt 6'9" | PF Enderlin | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-8 F| Enderlin – 27 pts. He had a powerful 2-handed slam in the first half courtesy of a behind-the-back pass from his brother. He had more offensive rebound putbacks than I could write down. Every time Enderlin missed it seemed like #10 was there to snag it and put it in. I was impressed with his head-fake and patience before goes up for his shot. Gus spaces and moves well without the ball; he reacts after his defender helps. He did not have any huge blocks on defense. However, his size and length in the lane keep players from attacking and when they do, he alters shots.
3. Joe Hurlburt Joe Hurlburt 6'10" | PF Enderlin | 2022 State #147 Nation MN (2022) |6-10 F| Enderlin – 19 pts with two triples. I was impressed with his shot-blocking and shot disrupting tonight. He was erasing shots tonight like it was going out of style. Joe had a highlight-reel behind the back pass to his brother tonight that led to a 2-handed slam. He was dribbling to the right and off the bounce, he passed it precisely to his brother in stride. It was a work of art. Joe had his own 2-handed dunk off a cut that left the defense standing still. His 3-point shot and mid-range jumper looked great again. Joe’s shot is flawless. He grabbed his fair share of rebounds. After the stats are added up, I am guessing he had 15-20 rebounds. He is a very unselfish passer. When he attacks, he is not just looking for his shot, he looks to set-up others. He had a ¾ court pass off a defensive rebound to a teammate streaking down the floor. The pass was right on the money and he had people draped all over him. His concentration and focus are great. There are only a handful of players in the state that could make that pass.
4. Noah Swenson Noah Swenson 6'5" | PF Oak Grove | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-5 F| Oak Grove – 11 points and 3-4 from the line. He had 4 blocked shot alone in the first quarter. His timing and anticipation are excellent. Early in the game, he had a quick backdoor cut for a basket. It is rare to see a big man have a quick backdoor cut for a layup. Noah was also tough on the offensive boards. Noah excels at following his own shot, grabbing the ball, and sticking it back in. I appreciated how he never backed down from the bigger Enderlin players. Noah is a tough player.
5. Carson Bartholomay Carson Bartholomay 6'6" | PF Enderlin | 2023 State ND (2023) |6-6 F| Enderlin – 16 pts and 3-4 from the line. He was fouled right before halftime on a half-court shot. There was 0.1 left on the clock. Carson sank all 3 free-throws and gave the Eagles a big boost before halftime. He had a slick steal in the second half that led to a 2-handed hammer. That play will have to be added to his highlight film. In the second half, Carson had a mismatch and he backed the D down like a bully and scored an easy bucket. That was impressive for a sophomore. Carson followed the lead of the Hurlburt’s by blocking shots and by grabbing O-boards.
6. Trevon Rodriguez Trevon Rodriguez 5'11" | PG Oak Grove Lutheran | 2022 State ND (2022) |5-11 G| Oak Grove – 12 points in the game. He had the first basket of the game with a drive across the lane and a layup through contact. He is a smooth player that seems to always be in control when he has the ball. Trevon hit a nice pull-up jumper right before the half. His best basket of the game came in the 3rd quarter on a pull-up jumper with a hand right in his face. He is one of the more underrated point guards in Class B.
7. Alijah Dixson Alijah Dixson 5'11" | PG Enderlin | 2022 State ND (2022) |5-11 G| Enderlin – 2 points in the game. He was in foul trouble all night. In the first half, Alijah had an athletic drive through the lane that he finished with a finger roll. He is a quick guard who does a nice job handling the ball for the Eagles.
8. Dawson Lemna (2021) |6-0 G| Enderlin – 8 points in the game. Dawson had a nice baseline runner to end the first quarter that helped cut into the OG lead. The lefty had two crucial 3-pointers tonight. Both came from the left-wing.
9. Cody Card Cody Card 5'11" | SG Oak Grove | 2022 State ND (2022) |5-11 G| Oak Grove – 7 points and 1 three-pointer. The lefty made his triple from the top of the key. He showed a nice mid-range jumper early in the game. Cody is a physical player who was tasked with guarding big forwards tonight. I love his hustle and effort.
