This was my first time watching these arch-rivals play each other and it did not disappoint. I think everyone wants to see a rematch back on this court in the Region 7 Championship!
Here are the top players from tonight’s game:
1. Trey Brandt Trey Brandt 6'1" | PG Beulah | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-0 G| Beulah – 27 points with 1 three-pointer. He was great early in the game keeping his eyes up the floor and pushing the ball down the court. The Miners scored multiple baskets because of his aggressiveness in moving the ball up the court. Trey only scored 6-points in the first half, but he still played well on defense and did a nice job taking care of the ball. He has great balance and strength when finishing in traffic. I like his finger-roll finishes, they look effortless. He made an impressive play when he grabbed a long rebound and dribbled coast to coast for a layup. Trey’s step-back 3-pointer in the third quarter was impressive and he showed great balance in doing so. His runners in traffic look like he is copying Steve Nash. Trey has great anticipatory skills that led to multiple steals. He made many pull-up jumpers tonight with a hand in his face. One of his toughest shots of the game came with a fade-away 1-handed shot off the glass with a defender in his grill. I was impressed with his blocked shots tonight, and he only had 1 foul all game. His biggest block of the game came in the second overtime. Trey had an impressive curl-cut off a down screen that he turned into a smooth 2-points. He also impressed me tonight when he rose above everyone else for rebounds. This showed his leaping ability and his great feel for the game. It was obvious tonight why he is one of the best players in North Dakota. Trey is a gamer who rises to the occasion.
2. Cole Fitterer Cole Fitterer 5'11" | SG Dickinson Trinity | 2021 State ND (2021) |5-11 G| Dickinson Trinity – 15 points, one 3-pointer, and 4-5 from the line. He had a great first half on defense holding down Brandt to 6 points. His lone 3-pointer came from the corner. Cole is a strong athletic guard who is tough to stop when he gets going downhill. For his size, he is a great offensive rebounder. I liked his head-fakes and patience after he snared a rebound. Cole changes speeds well and keeps the defense off balance. He has a nice balanced outside shot. I was impressed with his quick athletic baseline drive and physical finish. He showed his strength with a slash-and-finish 3-point play. Cole is a great shooter from the charity stripe. It was easy to see tonight that he is an All-Region talent.
3. Trapper Skalsky Trapper Skalsky 6'0" | SG Beulah | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-0 G| Beulah – 13 points with one 3-pointer. I thought his first step looked extremely quick. I was amazed at his hustle in transition that resulted in a tip-steal from behind. Trapper has a quick jump-shot and is an excellent rebounder for his size. His only 3-pointer was smooth and in-rhythm from the right-wing. He showed that he can finish with both hands with a strong left-handed drive and finish. I loved how he sealed and posted up in the second half. His turn around jumper from the block was timely. It is not very often you see a 6’ guard post up and score from the block. Trapper had a great game tonight.
4. Tanner Soehren Tanner Soehren 6'3" | PF Dickinson Trinity | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-3 F| Dickinson Trinity – 15 points, one triple, and 6-8 from the FT line. He scored the first basket of the game for the Titans. Tanner is a strong and gifted athlete. He does most of his damage from the block or in the paint. Tanner can shoot it from the perimeter. He made two jumpers in the game from just inside the three-point line. I was impressed with how hard he fights for position when rebounding. He has a nice touch around the rim.
5. Jacob Daniel Jacob Daniel 6'1" | SG Dickinson Trinity | 2021 State ND (202) |6-1 G| Dickinson Trinity – 12 points, three 3-pointers, and 1-1 from the line. I liked his hesitation move, he would stun the D by slowing his pace and then blow by them with his speed. Jacob has great ball skills and does a great job of taking command of the offense. In the first half, he made the elusive 4-point play. Jacob hit a corner “3” and was fouled during the act, he finished it with a made FT. I am enthralled with his smooth and quick crossover. Jacob is one of the best point guards in all of North Dakota.
6. Dawson Zuroff Dawson Zuroff 6'2" | SG Beulah | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-2 G| Beulah – 7 points in the game. I was amazed by his effort and hustle all game. He battled in the paint and on the glass. He did a top-notch job defensively on Soehren tonight. Every time I watch him play, I leave impressed with how he boxes out, elevates, and boards-up. Dawson had a monster steal in the 2nd overtime to help seal the victory. He was also clutch at the charity stripe in double-OT going 2-2.
7. Nathan Battest Nathan Battest 5'10" | SG Beulah | 2021 State ND (2021) |5-10 G| Beulah – 9 points, with one 3-pointers, and 2-3 from the line. I admire the way he hustles down the floor in transition and the effort he gives on the defensive end. Nathan had multiple baskets off hustle plays and in from turnovers he forced. He had an impressive finish amongst 2-defenders. Nathan’s biggest play of the game was when he hit a 3-pointer in the 4th quarter to take the lead back. He is a confident player, but he does not force anything on the offensive end.
8. Jake Shobe (2024) |5-11 G| Dickinson Trinity – This young lefty does not shy away from making big plays. He had a mature drive and finish in the fourth quarter when Trinity needed a bucket. Jake made his biggest basket with less than 20 seconds in the game to tie it up. He also banked in a 3-pointer to end the game in double overtime. The future is bright for this youngster.
9. Carson Weigum (2021) |6-6 F| Beulah – 6 points in the game. He opened the scoring up tonight after sprinting the floor and laying in the 2-points. Carson had a nice screen-and-roll bank shot basket from 8-feet.
