Three Up!
Duluth East. They Greyhounds are 0-2 against Minnehaha Academy and 8-0 against the rest of the state. Not only are they beating teams, the average margin of victory in East’s eight wins is nearly 28 points a game. The Hounds have a quality stretch of Jefferson this Thursday plus at Hermantown and at Hibbing next week. Mattie Thompson Mattie Thompson 6'6" | SF Duluth East | 2021 State MN and Noah Paulson Noah Paulson 6'8" | C Duluth East | 2021 State MN are taking turns totaling 20 point games before sitting and watching later in the second half. East is at Wayzata on March 13th in a game that I’m anxious to see. Like Woodbury, don’t be surprised of the Greyhounds soon make an appearance in the Class AAAA top ten.
Minneapolis Edison. The Edison rise continues! After losing their first two games of the season the Tommies have put together a seven game win streak that includes victories over Minneapolis South, Twin Cities Academy, and Hiawatha Collegiate. The biggest win was defeating South 86-50. Mr. Basketball Watch List nominee Jabari Langley Jabari Langley 6'0" | SG Minneapolis Edison | 2021 State MN is having another wonderful season averaging 25.5 points a game plus 6-foot-2 senior Johnny Spencer has made a name for himself with an All Minneapolis City like 21 points a contest. Langley went for 36 last night in a win over Washburn.
Woodbury. If I am being honest I have to say that at one point I wrote the Royals off. They lost three of their first four games including a double figure loss at Park and my thoughts went to “this could get rough”. Credit Woodbury for turning things around quickly. A win streak that includes victories over CDH, East Ridge, White Bear Lake, and Park (avenged the earlier loss with a 12-point win). Woodbury is winning with balance highlighted by four players in double figures in the East Ridge win ( Donald West Donald West 6'3" | SF Woodbury | 2021 State MN 15, Mac Lockner Mac Lockner 6'3" | SG Woodbury | 2021 State MN 14, Bradley Cimperman Bradley Cimperman 6'5" | SG Woodbury | 2021 State MN 14, Devin Padleford 12). At 7-3 and with the wins they’ve picked up, the Royals are a top ten threat. The next two games are at East Ridge and hosting Forest Lake (who beat Woodbury in the opener).
Three Down
Holy Angels. The Stars had some big expectations coming into this season but so far they’ve lost seven of nine. Of course four of their seven losses are against teams that rank in the top six in Class AAA basketball but they’ve also been blown out by a few teams they have the talent to beat. AHA has a number of chances to get some wins back in front of them although the schedule stays tough with DeLaSalle on Friday.
Minneapolis South. At 4-3 with a two game losing streak the Tigers are going through a bit of the growing pains that you would expect from a young team. Two of those losses are to Minneapolis North who is gunning for a title so it’s not like South has hit hard times or something. But Edison did hit them pretty hard. We expect South to go on a three game winning run before the rematch with Edison followed by a game on the island (vs DeLaSalle). Jerome Williams Jr leads South at 17 plus points a game.
Nevis. Nevis oh sweet Nevis! They were handling that number one ranking so well for a month beating some good teams from Red Lake, Cass Lake-Bena, and Nashwauk-Keewatin. Then out of nowhere a two game losing streak in close games versus Cass Lake-Bena (49-53) and undefeated Mahnomen/Waubun (78-83 in OT) has Nevis at 8-2. Look out Northome/Kelliher (5-6) and Blackduck (4-4), you have some angry Tigers headed your way.
