Whether exploring the canyon or taking a trip to the Sun Valley area, a basketball hoop is never far away and it is a near guarantee that someone is getting up shots nearby wherever you are. Though often overlooked by the bigger cities in the state, southern Idaho routinely puts out great teams that have high quality basketball programs and motivation like no other. In recent weeks, competition has been heating up in this region and many teams have made a compelling case for being an underdog at the state tournament. Continue reading for a look at a few recent games from across southern Idaho as well as some great personal performances.
Wood River vs. Mountain Home: In a low scoring affair, Mountain Home secured a victory over Wood River thanks to stifling defense and a cautious offensive approach. Mountain Home secured a near 20-point victory over Wood River who has struggled a lot in conference this season. Mountain Home took control of the game in the second half after having only a 3-point lead at halftime and never allowed Wood River to get close again. Mountain Home will be fighting for a shot at the district championship as they attempt to will their way into a winning season and a chance for some postseason action. Hyrum Wright led Mountain Home with 13 points along with a solid outing on both ends of the floor from Brandon Bethel Brandon Bethel 5'11" | PG Mountain Home | 2022 State ID while Wood River was led by 7 points each from Carter Gil and Tyler Petersen.
Carey vs. Butte County: In another southern Idaho matchup, Carey and Butte County squared off in an excellent game. Carey was able to sneak out of the gym with a 3-point win over Butte County that took a gusty performance and a lot of will to walk away with a victory. Carey knocked down free throws in the final quarter and played great defense down the stretch to keep Butte County away from a win. Carey was led by 23 points from Dallin Parke and 18 points from Hunter Smith. Butte County nearly secured a victory thanks to 17 points from Jaden Wanstrom and 14 points from Logan Gammett.
