A 525-mile drive to South Georgia allowed me to catch a great Class A-Public battle between previously undefeated Claxton and Portal in the Turpentine City on Friday night. Portal handed the Tigers a 55-50 loss. On Saturday, I visited Veterans, the lone remaining undefeated team in Class 5A and witnessed the Warhawks rout a shorthanded Peach County team 81-42. Here are some quick notes from the long weekend.
2021 6-2 W Cameron Arthur – Claxton
Fort Scott CC football-signee. Tallest player. Competes on the glass. Can space the floor as a three-point shooter. Plays hard and has a nose for the ball. Plays bigger than size.
2021 6-0 PG DeAngelo Hines DeAngelo Hines 6'0" | PG Veterans | 2021 State GA – Veterans
Quick guard. Gets into the lane and uses his bounce to finish at the rim. Light on his feet and can change directions quickly. Three-level scorer has deep range. Two-way player. Good hands and lateral quickness make him a tough perimeter defender capable of slowing down opposing top guards. Sneaky good prospect for non-D-Is.
2022 6-5 W TJ Grant TJ Grant 6'6" | SF Veterans | 2022 State GA – Veterans
Skilled wing is two-way standout. Strong finisher. Creative off the dribble, able to score from the mid-range and hit step-back threes after creating space. Smooth feel. Stuffs the stat sheet. Strong rebounder. Defensive instincts. Should end up at the D-I level.
2022 6-2 G Tajh Williams – Veterans
Versatile glue-guy that can do a little bit of everything. Often finds himself in the right place. Reliable three-point shooter that can also get to the rim. Can serve as a playmaker and help push Hines off the ball when needed. Able to guard 1-3 on the perimeter.
2021 6-0 G Ryland Pereda – Veterans
Scrappy on-ball defender. Quick feet. Scored at three levels. Good athlete can win loose balls. Crafty finisher.
