Our team had you covered state wide. I scanned the landscape and had a hunch the Class 2A-Region 2 quarterfinal between Southwest Florida Christian and Bayshore Christian would be a close one. It turned out to be a gem of a game with a lot of back and forth scoring.
Bayshore Christian went ahead with 15.6 seconds left on a 3-pointer by 2021 guard Deon Brown Deon Brown 6'1" | CG Bayshore Christian | 2021 State FL 68-67. However, Southwest Florida Christian pulled off the road victory on an in-bound feed from 2022 guard Jay White Jay White 6'1" | PG Southwest Florida Christian | 2022 State FL to 2021 guard Julio Lopez who layed it in. After a missed Brown 3-ball at the buzzer, the celebration was on.
Note: Next Tuesday is when all 52 region semifinals will be played at the 7 p.m. timeslot with Feb. 26 serving as the region final date.
Here is a look at the top notes from the SWFL Christian-Bayshore Christian outing.
Southwest Florida Christian overcame adversity early
Trailing 13-2 right out of the gates, Southwest Florida Christian looked lost. Without its head coach due to COVID-19, the team rallied back and made it a game near the end of the first quarter. Behind good ball movement, high percentage shooting and unselfish play, it quickly turned into a battle. At the end of the third quarter, the Kings led 56-55 and there were not many times on the night where they led. Bayshore Christian was up for much of the game.
White is in full command
The game moved on and the better Jay White Jay White 6'1" | PG Southwest Florida Christian | 2022 State FL performed. The 2022 6-1 guard is a calming presence on the court, always vocal and a true leader. White is a gifted athlete who rarely gets rattled. He worked through double teams early, pushed the tempo and hit his teammates in stride for jumpers. White totaled 14 points as he turned on his attack style late when his team needed buckets. His in-bound feed to Lopez was the moment of the game as the Southwest Florida Christian pulled off the win.
Brown can flat out shoot it
Shooting is the best attribute for 2021 6-2 guard Deon Brown Deon Brown 6'1" | CG Bayshore Christian | 2021 State FL . He came firing out of the gates with a trio of knockdown 3’s as Bayshore Christian controlled the start. Brown recorded a game-best 26 points and has a knack for a well-timed jumper. His 3-pointer (mentioned above in the intro) nearly proved to be the winning shot. Brown expanded his game as a crafty attacker as he matured these past two seasons. A scoring threat any time he touches the ball, whoever brings in Brown at the collegiate level will be super happy.
Sanabria Colon and Rogosich were knocking it down
Ball movement and in sync play is what Southwest Florida Christian is all about. 2023 6-0 guard Yadniel Sanabria Colon is one confident athlete. He has an impactful jumper and he can do damage as a passer and driver as well. With 21 points, Sanabria Colon did his part to bring the Kings back in the outing. 2022 6-0 guard Josh Rogosich fits in nicely here as he is an energetic shooter and a good ballhandler. He takes the pressure off of White, who rarely if ever gets a breath on the bench.
Crews and Codlyn battled for Bayshore Christian
Lay-in finishes were the specialty for both 2021 starters Charles Crews Charles Crews 6'3" | CG Bayshore Christian | 2021 State FL and Joshaun Codlyn Joshaun Codlyn 6'4" | SG Bayshore Christian | 2021 State FL . Headed to Division II St. Michael’s this fall, Crews added 17 points and took advantage of burstiness and inside slashing. He put on his mix of power and speed down the stretch. As for Codlyn, the 6-4 guard/forward tacked on 18 points and did more of the same at the glass against the smaller framed Southwest Florida Christian squad.
