The MHSAA high school basketball season is finally underway and we’re already through a full week of action. With the season being shortened, schedules are being condensed, meaning teams are playing more games per week than usual. The first week of action was highlighted by several inter-conference rivalry games and the Union Red Hawk Showcase, which featured some of the best players and programs in the state. Below are my picks for the players of the week from the first week of games.

Jakhary has the Wolverines off to a 2-0 start thanks to a couple of big games for the sophomore guard. Jakhary scored 16 points in Godwin’s 41-40 win over OK Silver foe Hopkins. He followed up that performance with a 22-point outing in a 64-52 win over Tri-Unity Christian.

Kyler VanderjagtKylerVanderjagt6'3" | SFNorthview | 2022StateMI, G, Northview 2022"

Kyler scored 24 points in Northview’s 88-55 win over Lowell on Friday, February 12th. He then got back to work the next day, scoring 18 points in the Wildcats 61-36 win over Grand Rapids Union in the Red Hawk Showcase.
