Zach Clark, junior, Cair Paravel:
Cair Paravel continues to test itself against top teams. Friday they were up to the challenge, taking Lebo (#6 in 1A Div 1) to double overtime before losing 73-68. Clark showed he could go toe-to-toe with a high level of competition, hitting 8-12 from the field and 9-13 from the line for 25 points. The 6-foot-3 junior is rangy, athletic and a tough mid-range matchup.
Isaac Detweiler, sophomore, Axtell:
The 5-foot-9 Detweiler is really giving the Eagles something to be excited about. He gave it his all last week with 29 in a losing effort against Valley Heights. Friday he led the Eagles to a win with five 3-pointers and 5-6 from the line for 22 points in a 57-53 win over Washington County.
Tyler Duncan, senior, Santa Fe Trail:
What an explosion of points. Santa Fe Trail raced to 91 points in a blowout of Osawatomie. Senior Maddox Decker Maddox Decker 5'9" | PG Santa Fe Trail | 2021 State KS poured in 28, but it was his senior teammate Duncan with high honors. The 5-foot-7 guard cashed in four 3-pointers and scored 14 total buckets for 34 points, nearly triple his season average.
Nate Hawk Nate Hawk 6'6" | PF Valley Falls | 2021 State KS , senior, Valley Falls (pictured):
The athletic 6-foot-7 forward hasn’t had a statistically impressive season. He was slowed mid-season, but appears to be rounding into form. After racking up 17 points against Atchison County, he rolled to 28 points in a win over Jackson Heights. The Dragons moved up to #10 in 2A, and look like a tough post-season club. If Hawk gets going, he’ll be a really tough match-up for most small school teams.
Emmitt Jueneman Emmitt Jueneman 6'1" | SF Hanover | 2022 State KS , junior, Hanover:
Though other Wildcats make important contributions for the Wildcats, ranked #2 in 1A Div. 2, it is Emmitt Jueneman Emmitt Jueneman 6'1" | SF Hanover | 2022 State KS who leads the way night in and night out. When Hanover needs a big bucket or big stop, the physical and talented junior is there to provide it. He tossed in 22 against a tough Doniphan West club on Friday.
Devan Mcewen Devan Mcewen 6'3" | SG Lebo | 2021 State KS , senior, Lebo:
The Wolves were pushed to double OT by Cair Paravel. The all-state senior rose to the occasion with 25 points.
Kade Perine, sophomore, Rossville:
Though his 12 points might not jump off the stat sheet, the Bulldawgs win over Silver Lake is worthy of note. Rossville has really struggled this year, but the ferocious point guard Perine led the way to a rare win Friday over arch-rival Silver Lake. He is relentless on defense and spearheads the offensive attack.
Gavin Pieschl, senior, Marysville:
Following up a win against Rock Creek (#4 in 3A), the Bulldogs rolled over Clay Center Friday night. The senior guard scorched the nets with four 3-pointers and 24 points.
Kale Purcell Kale Purcell 6'3" | SF Holton | 2021 State KS , senior, Holton:
The long and athletic senior has on the rise. Other than a head-scratching loss to Sabetha, the Wildcats have played well for about a month, including a close defeat to ranked 5A Lansing, and a win over Tonganoxie, which is currently #6 in 4A. They could be a team to watch come playoff time. Against Hiawatha Friday, the 6-foot-3 wing tossed in 26, his third game in a row with at least 21 points.
Nahcs Wahwassuck Nahcs Wahwassuck 6'5" | CG Royal Valley | 2022 State KS , junior, Royal Valley:
In case you hadn’t noticed, this guy is really good. He is too talented and athletic to really slow down. The team around him has been somewhat depleted, but hangs in at #7 in 3A primarily because of the relentless output of the point guard/wing. He can shoot, penetrate, orchestrate an offense and get teammates involved. He poured in 32 last game versus Holton, and Friday he hit 29 in a win over Nemaha Central.
Dawson Zenger Dawson Zenger 6'1" | CG Rock Creek | 2021 State KS , senior, Rock Creek:
Wow! What else can you say? Against a tough defensive and athletic team like St. Marys, Zenger exploded for 35 points. He pours in points against every opponent, but doing it against a fundamentally sound Bears team is really impressive. Zenger has five games with at least 30 points.
