Hoops 2.0 has been hosting various showcases for the past couple of months, including their most recent one this past Sunday 2/21.
Some of the top talent in Northern and Southern California participated in the event, and here’s a quick look at some of the top standouts.
1. Kalib Lacount – King/Drew 2021
Lacount is a small guard who plays much bigger than his size. He’s all heart and toughness. What stood out to me the most about him was his ability to attack the glass. He’s often the smallest player on the court but he battles among the trees and can secure rebounds. He’s a such a crafty ball-handler and quick off the dribble, can handle defensive pressure. He applies pressure defensively.
2. Barrett Lehnertz – Foothill 2022
Lehnertz is a solid looking frontcourt player. He has good mechanics and footwork in the paint. He has a nice little hook shot too. He’s slight, doesn’t look imposing, but he can play and he’s very effective around the rim. He’s active in the paint; good mobility and and crashes the glass well. He moves well defensively, slides his feet and uses his length. He has a nice little midrange shot too.
3. Justin Cornelius – Post Grad Year 2021
The former Crenshaw Cougar is taking a post grad year and looks like he bulked up a bit. He was always a talented wing scorer, and he looks even more comfortable with the ball in his hands and being able to shoot off the bounce. He can shoot a little floater when he gets into the lane. A three-point threat who can face up and shoot. He’s got the tools to be a solid wing defender as well with his size and length.
4. Biko Johnson – TMG Prep 2021
Johnson is another player taking a post grad year. He’s a strong guard who uses his strength well. he can break down the defense and get into the lane. He has good body control and he can finish strong at the rim around the defense. He’s able to draw contact and he can get himself to the free throw line. A good floor leader with good vision. He’s capable of running a team’s offense.
