Game I Watched: #1 Varnum beat #19 Buffalo Valley 62-32
Varnum is a good team that can beat you in a lot of different ways. They have a do-it-all combo guard in Martell Davis. He can shoot, score and defend at a high clip and deserves way more attention than what he is getting. They have a 6’7 big bodied post with smooth finishing skills in Terrance Madkins. And they have a glue-guy post that is a finesse player who always does the right thing in Cordell King. Varnum is deep, experienced and talented and it’s really been showing. They punched their ticket to state tonight.
Other Top Games:
#9 Cyril beat #8 Battiest 62-39
#20 Forgan 61 beat #14 Tyrone 44
#2 Roff beat Mt. View-Gotebo 56-33
#4 Lomega beat #18 Pittsburg 52-49
#10 Earlsboro beat #7 Kinta 40-38
#5 Red Oak beat Glencoe 50-39
Upset of the Night: #6 Leedey beat #3 Duke 39
Duke was one of the top teams in the state last year. They consistently won games against bigger schools that were ranked. A year later, they lost a lot of talent, but still sit at 19-4. After their loss in regionals, Duke won’t be making it back to the state tournament.
Players to Watch
Martell Davis – Varnum
Davis is a 6’3 combo guard that is a serious college prospect. He’s an elite shooter and can get to the lane too. Very impressive body control and always makes the right play. Walked away more impressed with him than many players I’ve seen this season.
Terrance Madkins – Varnum
Big bodied post that uses his size and weight well. At 6’7, Madkins got offensive rebounds and putbacks all night long. It’s been a big season for the forward.
Drew Sheppard – Roff
Sheppard is a great shooter that can get hot. Just a few weeks back in the playoffs, he had four threes. Sheppard can fill it up when he’s on
Trayson Miller – Roff
He’s a playmaker. He can score, and is counted on to score, but he’s also an underrated passer and has a strong motor. His motor leads to steals and rebounds.
Roberto Hernandez – Tyrone
The 6’5 athlete can rebound and score at a very high level. He constantly produces double doubles and is a threat to score from all levels. After Tyrone’s loss to Forgan, he’ll have to fight to keep them alive.
Prediction: Varnum is dominant. They would compete, if not win, in many classes other than their own. Roff is close, though, and they could be the hottest team in the state. At 27-1, Roff has one of the best records in the state, but I’m picking Varnum to win it all. Davis and Madkins are too much star power.
