Sam Howery Sam Howery 6'1" | PG St. Mary’s | 2022 State CO – St. Mary’s
St. Mary’s is one of the top teams in 3A and what should scare the rest of the state is their best player is only a junior. Howery just reached the 1,000 points scored benchmark, and he will be in elite company as he will be one of the only players in CHSAA history to have as many points, rebounds, and assists when it is all said and done. He is having a sensational season as he has the Pirates off to an 8-0 start and with their 88-59 win over Salida; it was easy to see why he is one of the state’s most special players. Howery had his second triple-double of the year, which showed just how much he impacts the game. He finished with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. He controls the tempo, gives his teammates very easy scoring opportunities, and plays the right way. He was excellent on Wednesday evening and had the line of the day.
Jackson Ward – Holy Family
Holy Family had an upset win against a Top-10 4A team in the state that has been in quite a rhythm. Holy Family played as a unit and executed late in the game but what they got from their 6’3 forward was what won them the game. Ward finished with a game-high 17 points on an efficient 8-10 from the field. He rebounded well (7 boards), protected the paint, and was dialed in on both ends of the court. He even stepped out and hit a 3-pointer which shows the type of game he is having, and really he has been an underrated standout on the year. Holy Family is on a four-game winning streak and has some games coming up where they can see exactly where they fall and set a barometer. Solid day and MVP in their game against Erie.
Isaiah Poindexter Isaiah Poindexter 6'1" | CG Montbello | 2022 State CO — Far Northeast Warriors
We haven’t discussed Poindexter enough this season as he is having an underrated season out of the Denver Prep League. He is at 18.3 points a game and has the Warriors with a 4-3 record. He was why Far Northeast was able to finally stop Gateway and issue them their first loss of the season. Poindexter had a game-high 22-points in the game as he hit two 3-pointers, got to the cup, and finished as well as made it to the FT line. Poindexter has a versatile game and is a player that opposing teams have to worry about each time out and showed that he could lead his team to a victory if need be. Solid game for him.
Kobe Greene – Windsor
Kobe Greene is a player that has continued to surprise me all season long. He is a player that I did not even know existed until this season, and now that I have noticed who he is, he has been a constant after having breakout game after breakout game. Greene is a senior guard with range, and he lets it fly. In Windsor’s win over the No.1 team in the state that had not lost since the first game of last season, Greene was the player that turned the game around. He hit six 3-pointers on the night and opened up the rest of the floor for others to operate. Mead had to extend their defense and keep a guy on him, and when they did not, he made them pay. Windsor is a bit undersized so having a player that can wiggle free the defense and force pressure onto him gives space for others. Greene’s a player.
Jimmy Starry Jimmy Starry 6'1" | CG Boulder | 2021 State CO – Boulder
I have been waiting for Starry to explode with a big game as he is a skillful player that scores in bunches. He has a great feel for the game, solid size, and mixes that with athleticism. Starry is a player that cannot be denied at the rim, gets out in the open court, and also can get his shot off against defenders as well. Boulder has been having an up and down season, so being able to get back on the right foot against a pesky Legacy team was critical for them. Starry led the Panthers with a game-high 21 points. He was engaged defensively, found holes in the defense, and got himself going early. He’s a player I expect to only take off at this point.
