The four games were all very competitive, with the first one going into overtime, the second one featuring a furious come from behind victory and the last two being decided at the buzzer.
There was tons of talent in the gym with nationally ranked teams and players that all showed out, and it was all for a good cause as it raised money for cancer research at VCU’s Massey Cancer Center.
With so much talent in the gym we had to break up the standouts and did so by region. Below you will find the scores to the games and part one of the many standouts, and if you want to watch some high level and competitive basketball you can check out the archives on The CBG Live Network.
Game 1: 703 Rockets (VA) 77 CBG East (VA) 70 (OT)
Game 2: Liberty Heights (NC) 62 National Christian (MD) 54
Game 3: IMG Academy Post Grad (FL) 86 Bull City Prep (NC) 84
Game 4: Blue Magic (VA) 63 522 Warriors (VA) 60
Eric Gordon | 5’9” PG | 703 Rockets 2021
The first game of the day set the tone for the entire day, much like Gordon sets the tone for the Rockets every time he’s on the floor. A strong lead guard who’s very reliable with the ball in his hands, he’s a guy who handles pressure and gets you into your sets, and he makes everyone better and makes winning plays for his team in all facets of the game. The lead guard showed why he’d be a great fit at a D2 or D3 program looking for a floor general, as he finished with 10 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds and just 2 turnovers in their win.
Miles Webb Miles Webb 6'7" | PF St. Stephen's St. Agnes | 2022 State VA | 6’7” PF | 703 Rockets 2022
Webb continues to show that he should be one of the biggest stock risers this summer in the DMV area, as the versatile 6’7” forward just shows more and more to his game every day and was part of a very impressive Rockets’ front court. With good height comes great length and mobility for Webb, who can guard multiple positions and has tons of traits you love on the defensive end, but he also showed that he can be a mismatch offensively as he can use his athleticism to finish in the paint and he even showed he can step out and make shots out to the three-point line as well as pass on the perimeter too. He finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds in the win.
Elliott Black Elliott Black 6'6" | PF St. Stephen's & St. Agnes | 2022 State VA | 6’5” PF | 703 Rockets 2022
Webb’s front court mate, Black is the perfect compliment to him as he isn’t as long or as fluid on the perimeter as Webb is, but he’s the physical and explosive presence in the paint that does the dirty work and just gets the job done. He was all over the place using his physicality to clear out space to finish and rebound, he had a couple of very impressive plays above the rim and he showed the ability to step out and hit the midrange and short corner jump shot as well. He was the MVP of the first game, finishing with a double-double of 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the field and 14 rebounds, almost splitting them on the defensive and offensive glass.
Devin Ceaser Devin Ceaser 6'1" | CG St. Stephen's & St. Agnes | 2022 State VA | 6’1” CG | 703 Rockets 2022
Ceaser was the MVP in the showcase game the Rockets came down to a few weeks ago, and while he struggled at times shooting the ball this game he found ways to be effective as a facilitator and a defender using his blazing quickness and speed, and he really stepped up down the stretch in the fourth quarter and overtime getting some big buckets despite a slow start. When he say he’s blazing fast it’s an understatement, as he can go baseline to baseline in the blink of an eye, and with the ball in his hands he’s able to get out in transition and get in to the paint regularly no matter who’s in his way. Despite struggling from the field he finished with 15 points and chipped in 7 rebounds and 4 steals.
Garrett Brennan | 6’2” WG | 703 Rockets 2022
Brennan was missing the last time the Rockets came down to Richmond, and you can see how important he is to this group as he brings a blend of skill, energy and a very good understanding to the team that allows him to be a very productive glue guy and leader on this group. He’s constantly talking and encouraging his teammates whether he’s on the floor or not, he can play on the ball and make plays for others and he can step off the ball and shoot it from deep and he is an underrated athlete that brings it defensively both on and off the basketball. He finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in the win.
Kahihl Venable | 5’10” G | CBG East 2021
East got off to a slow start in the game, and it was Venable who kept them in it with a great first half after some guys challenged him and he rose to the occasion. The 5’10” guard isn’t really a point guard as much as he is just a hooper, as he can use his big frame to get in the lane and draw contact and he’s a guy who can knock down shots from deep and stretch the defense. He finished with 12 points making some big shots in the first half and allowing them to stay in it when things looked like they may get out of hand.
Alphonzo Billups Alphonzo Billups 6'7" | SF Varina | 2022 State #154 Nation VA | 6’6” WF | CBG East 2022
The high major recruit brought it in a very competitive game, and he only got stronger as the game got closer and came down to the wire. He was the Swiss-army knife he always is as he rebounded and started the break, made plays on both ends of the floor and he made big shots down the stretch when his team needed him to, including the pull-up that ended up tying the game and eventually sent it into overtime. He finished with an impressive 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals in the overtime loss.
Amari Baylor | 6’4” PF | CBG East 2022
It was a battle in the trenches all game between these two teams, and Baylor came off of the bench and brought the physical punch and production in the paint the East team definitely needed. Baylor thrives in these sort of physical game that are also uptempo, as he can bang and create space down low, and he can rebound and runs the floor very hard to get up and down for easy buckets. He was extremely efficient too, finishing with 17 points on 8-for-10 shooting and 7 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play.
