Through all of the stoppages, postponements, rescheduling’s, and other barriers that can affect players and teams this season, we have still managed to get some great games, team efforts, and individual performances. Let’s take at some of the point guards and shooting guards to keep an eye out down the home stretch.
PG’s
Mozae Downing-Rivers Mozae Downing-Rivers 6'3" | PG Free State | 2022 State KS , 6’3, Free State: The leader and spearhead for an extremely tough and talented group, Downing has been tremendous this season. Brings a lot to the table from the point guard position that just pop to the eyes. He broke the school record this season with assists in a single game with 11, and is constantly hovering around double digits in the big 3 categories of rebounds, scoring, and assists. Free State is poised for a big run, and with Downing to stear the ship, look out.
Trevor Mcbride Trevor Mcbride 6'2" | CG Basehor Linwood | 2022 State KS , 6’2, Basehor: Currently with the team in a pause, but McBride was starting to pick up some big time steam with a great stretch of performances against big time teams. We all know the defense, intensity, and leadership skills come with his package, but he has started to get his shooting back in form, attacking the rim with a purpose, and play making ability rolling. Look for him to come out with a vengeance when they can resume play.
Carson Kieffer Carson Kieffer 6'1" | PG Hays | 2022 State KS , 6’1, Hays: The Hays point guard is putting together a really solid season, averaging a little over 10 points, 6 assists, and 2 rebounds per game for a Hays team that has been on an absolute tear this season. Kieffer is shooting a blistering 50% from 3 this year as well as 69% from 2, making him a very efficient point guard that a team can rely on night in and night out. Kieffer has the keys to the Hays mobile, and he is driving it smoothly.
Others to Watch For
Damare Smith Damare Smith 5'10" | PG Shawnee Mission Northwest | 2022 State KS , SMNW: Another tough and talented point guard who can take over ball games, something good teams need down the stretch
Sebastian Hamm Sebastian Hamm 6'2" | PG Blue Valley Southwest | 2022 State KS , BVSW: A high level scorer and shooter, does a good job of controlling the game as well. With BVSW sitting at .500, with Hamm leading the charge, could be a sneaky team later in the year.
Kyle Grill Kyle Grill 6'4" | CG Maize | 2022 State KS , Maize: At 6’5, just has an incredible athletic ability mixed in with skill. A great passer and shooter to go along with an ability to jump out of the gym. Maize is rolling, and Grill brings the complete package to the table for them averaging 12 points and 4 assists per game.
SG’s
Jordan Brown Jordan Brown 6'2" | SG St Francis | 2022 State GA , 6’3, Basehor: The gifted scorer has had a very impactful season so far highlighted with a big time 30 point half earlier in the season and a tremendous 3/4 court buzzer beater in one of their last games before their pause. Brown though has started to move the ball better as well and picked his spots to get shots off better. The combination of him and McBride as well as some tough role players starting to step up, look for Brown to continue to help get this Basehor team with a winning pedigree, going on quite a run.
Kernan Bundy, 6’3, Blue Valley North: On a team loaded with talent and a wining mindset coming off of a huge win over Blue Valley Northwest, Bundy has been a tremendous glue piece to the squad. One of the bounciest, more athletic guards in the area, Bundy has been exploding on to the scene this season with his ability to guard, get out in transition, and finish. As he continues to log minutes and grow his game, Bundy is on track to become an absolute force from the two guard spot for the remainder of his career. Look for him to make a couple of huge plays down the stretch that help lead BVN to wins.
Skyler Clevenger Skyler Clevenger 6'1" | SG Andover Central | 2022 State KS , 6’1, Andover Central: Clevenger has had a tremendous season scoring the ball for Andover Central, and with them struggling this season, he has done a great job at helping a team that is learning on the fly, compete in big time games. Clevenger can score the ball from each level, averaging roughly 16 points per game and is coming off of a 29 point outburst. With his ability, Central may scare some teams come playoff time.
Others to Watch For
Howard Johnson Howard Johnson 6'0" | SG Junction City | 2022 State KS , Junction City: Returning from and elbow injury, scored 17 points in his first game back
Seth Madron Seth Madron 6'2" | SG Mcpherson | 2022 State KS , McPherson: An extremely athletic talent helping lead an always dangerous Mcpherson team.
Cooper Autry, Holcomb: A long guard who rebounds well and can shoot the 3 at a high clip. Holcomb has a chance to make a ton of noise in the post season.
