Washburn Rural’s Joe Berry Joe Berry 6'4" | CG Washburn Rural | 2021 State KS and Jack Hutchinson Jack Hutchinson 6'1" | CG Washburn Rural | 2021 State KS were their usual spectacular selves Friday night. Topeka High’s Jalen Smith Jalen Smith 6'2" | SG Topeka High | 2021 State KS gave his all in a heartbreaking loss to Emporia. Cair Paravel’s Noah Hastert Noah Hastert 6'6" | C Cair Paravel | 2022 State KS , with 24 points, was too much for Marais des Cygnes Valley.
But let’s take this chance to focus on some guys who don’t grab as many headlines, but nonetheless deserve credit for their contributions to their respective programs Friday night:
Ethan Everhart, junior, Cair Paravel:
Perhaps the Lions most athletic defender on the perimeter, the 6-foot-1 Everhart is quick, aggressive and a team player. He handles the ball and makes sure his talented teammates are getting fed. He’s a threat from the perimeter, averaging about 6 points per contest, which is what he tossed in against Marais des Cygnes Valley.
Mu’Khajhae Daniels, senior, Highland Park:
Daniels has been an important contributor to one of the top 5A teams in the state the past two seasons. As the Scots have struggled to get things figured out this season, Daniels has been a solid senior leader who is consistent in his contribution. With a lot of talent teammates, it says a lot that coach Mike Williams relies heavily upon Daniels. The senior tossed in 12 against Seaman, and had 11 last Friday against Hayden.
Mateo Hyman Mateo Hyman 6'2" | CG Seaman | 2022 State KS , junior, Seaman (pictured):
Hyman has struggled to find his footing this year. Injuries and constantly changing lineups have kept him from building on the spectacular finish to his sophomore season. But Hyman is showing of late that he will be one of the top returners in the Capital City next year. The smooth ball handler and dynamic playmaker knocked down 22 against Highland Park, by far Seaman’s best scoring option.
BJ Canady, freshman, Topeka High:
Canady’s roll is growing for the Trojans. He hadn’t scored in double digits until a week ago. Last Friday he produced 14 against Junction City. Against Emporia he accounted for 12, his second double-figure game. The giant 6-foot-5 post has limitless potential, and will improve dramatically as he develops skills such as free throw shooting – he was 0-4 against the Spartans.
Josh Williams, senior, Washburn Rural:
The senior point guard has played in more big games than he can probably count. As part of the Junior Blues program, expectations are through the roof. Williams has been a reliable and versatile leader who doesn’t take shots away from Berry, Hutchinson, etc. Williams has been coming on strong of late. He tossed in 8 against Hayden Friday.
