The showcase event consisted of 3 high level exhibition games and a top 40 and top 20 game. Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the guards who who increased their stock the most..
Kosy Akametu (6’3″ King Drew, 2021) One of the guys who has really made a name for himself during this period has been the King Drew standout. Akametu, who’s father played on the Nigerian national team, is a long guard who has the potential to hit a growth spurt and turn into a wing. He just turned 17 and is young for his class. Akametu is an excellent finisher at the rim and explodes off the bounce with the best of them. With the ball in his hands, he does a great job of creating for himself off the dribble and has potential to be a good shot creator. Akametu is starting to catch the heads of scouts and has the potential to end up at a high major school.
Jacob Trobel (6’3″ Arcadia High School, 2021) Another player who came into the camp underrated and increasing their stock, Jacob Trobel made a huge impression en route to being voted in the top 20 game. The 6’3″ guard is a fearless finisher and has a big strong frame. He reminds some of Eric Bledsoe with his affinity to get to the basket and his strength and athleticism. On defense, Trobel does a good job playing the passing lanes and also utilizes his leaping ability and instincts to get chase down and weakside blocks. The strong guard also shows the potential to be a good shooter as he good rotation on his shot and a nice follow through. Keep an eye on Trobel as his stock is on the rise.
Rondell Moore Rondell Moore 6'1" | CG Fremont | 2021 State CA-S (6’3″ Fremont High School, 2021) The high flying guard brought down the gym starting off the day by jumping and windmilling over another player in an impromptu dunk off. The Fremont HS guard is a high flying and flashy guard who does a great job of getting inside the paint and finishing above the rim. Rondell is an absolute threat on the fast break with crafty finishes with either hand and he has great body control utilizing hop steps and euros. Moore also showed off his passing ability with several bounce passes through traffic. Moore averaged 22 a game last year for Fremont.
Jaylen Vazquez (6’2″ Bishop Montgomery, 2022) The younger brother of Montana point guard Josh Vazquez, the genes are evident as the younger brother has the same high IQ as his brother and the same floor general ability and savvy. The 6’2″ guard plays with extreme confidence and is very crafty. He does a great job of using his body and attacking angles to get by his man and finishing several ways especially utilizing a nice floater when he is near the hole. Vasquez is an excellent passer and does a great job of finding the open man and getting his teammates involved. Southern Utah and Eastern Washington have offered Vazquez among others.
Marques Calcote (6’2″ Paramount HS, 2022) One of the most underrated guards in Los Angeles, Calcote was able to make his mark when he stepped on the court at the BYGLA Bubble. Marques seems to have grown a bit as he looks taller and stronger than before. The 6’2 guard has very good ball handling ability and uses his shiftiness to create space for jumpers. He also does a great job in taking his man off the dribble to the hole. Marques is an excellent creator and playmaker as the Paramount guard makes smart and creative passes in both the half court and on the fast break. Calcote impressed in his 2nd game with a game high 25 pts.
