The St. Francis Red Raiders have started the season with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. After a season-opening losses to Canisius and St. Joseph’s, Coach Brian Ferris and the Red Raiders have bounced back strong with three consecutive victories against Nichols, St. Mary’s, and Cardinal O’Hara.
One Hawk who has started the season off well is junior Power Forward Samir Bell Samir Bell 6'3" | SF Bellport | 2022 State NY . Reid has used his physical tools and strength to gain an edge thus far, routinely overpowering opponents inside the three-second area. The 6’6”, 235lb brute has snagged 17 offensive rebounds thus far, which equates to 3.4 per game. Not only does that lead his team, but that places him tops overall in the conference!
Senior Mahlik Thompson has been strong defensively thus far for St. Francis; he is averaging 0.8 steals per game and 0.6 blocks per game from the Guard position. The Red Raiders could certainly use a consistent defensive presence this year; after all, this is a team that finished just 4th out of 8 teams in total steals a season ago. Thompson will attempt to maintain his strong defensive play as the season bears on.
Another Red Raider that has impressed thus far is Sophomore Sammy Marry. Standing at 5’11” and weighing 155 pounds, Marry uses his slight stature to his advantage, weaving in and out of defenders with the ball in his hands. He has played a crucial role off the bench, distributing 1.4 assists per game. Marry will need to continue to support the Red Raider offense when the starters sit as the season progresses.
