In the second edition of my series of articles on the top players in the BCL, I focus on four versatile wing players who showed out in that game:
Devin Parham | Charlestown | 6’2” | Guard | 2021
Parham is a big-time shooter that any coach would love to have spacing the floor for them. His jumper has a quick release, high arc, and soft touch. Off the catch, his range extends beyond the three-point line, he can also shoot off the dribble, and hit step-back threes. Despite getting off to a slow start in their win over Snowden, he never lost confidence, kept letting it fly, and ended up knocking down four triples on his way to a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. He can also make plays off the bounce and hit a floater. With his size and shooting ability, I find it hard to imagine he won’t find a home at the next level.
Steven Jean-Louis | Charlestown | 6’4” | Guard | 2022
Steven is an explosive wing, with great strength, who excels around the rim and on the perimeter. He’s a force on the offensive glass, finishes through contact, and blocks shots on the other end. He has terrific bounce, off one foot or two, and threw down a ferocious one-handed, fast-break dunk against Snowden. He finished the contest with 15 points and 6 rebounds. He also gets to the rim off the dribble, finishes with either hand, and can hit catch-and-shoot jumpers out to the three-point line. College programs in need of a wing with a college-ready frame and a ton of upside should seriously consider this young man.
Lansana Kaba | Snowden | 6’3” | Guard | 2021
After playing a key role in Snowden’s run to the TD Garden last season, Kaba has opened his senior season with four straight games scoring in double figures. He’s a long, physical wing, with a smooth, under control, versatile game on both ends. He handles the ball well, attacks the basket with force, and is a capable passer. He showed a smooth stroke off the catch from three and soft touch on floaters in the lane. As a defender, he has the lateral quickness to hang with guards and the size and strength to guard bigger players. Overall, his game and body are both ready for the college game.
Carlos Ortiz | Snowden | 6’4” | Guard | 2022
Ortiz has also kicked off his season by scoring in double figures in every game thus far and grabbed just under 10 rebounds per game along the way. He’s a long, athletic wing, who is dynamic in the open floor, active on the offensive glass, and has a promising perimeter game. He’s comfortable with the ball in his hands, gets to the rim with long strides, and shows signs of a reliable jumper. He has a solid stroke at the foul line and hit a side-step mid-range jumper in their game against Charlestown. With plenty of room to fill out his frame and take his athleticism to the next level, his game has only begun to pop and he’s one of the top prospects in the city.
