Continue ReadingAs conference play is nearing its end and the district tournaments are all on the horizon, many teams are making a final push to solidify their spots while also attempting to make an appearance at the state tournament at the beginning of March. A lot of high-level basketball is being played at the moment and it will be interesting to see who can rise to the top and peak at the right time. In the following weeks, we will finally be able to see which teams are destined to make a state appearance and which teams might be able to make a surprise run at the championship. Continue reading for a look at a couple of recent games as well as some rundowns of key performances from players.
Middleton vs. Columbia: In a battle for the top spot in the 4A SIC conference, Middleton and Columbia battled in an impressive display of grit, determination, and pure skill. Middleton was able to secure an overtime victory on a last second bucket from Merrit Foote. Middleton battled hard throughout the game and had to make a gutsy comeback to force overtime and they were able to go 1-1 versus Columbia on the season. With this win, Middleton’s only conference loss this season comes from the Columbia Wildcats and Middleton has solidified their spot atop the 4A SIC. Tyler Medaris Tyler Medaris 6'7" | PF Middleton | 2022 State ID had a great game for the Vikings and Jaylen Alexander Jaylen Alexander 6'7" | PF Columbia | 2021 State ID did a great job of scoring and rebounding, but his effectiveness was diminished by foul trouble, a constant narrative throughout this season.
Melba vs. Cole Valley: Melba pulled out a conference victory over Cole Valley recently. The Mustangs were able to use a solid shooting performance and a great defensive effort to suffocate the efforts of the Cole Valley Chargers’ attack. Melba has been having a solid season thus far and this victory is putting them in a great position heading into the district tournament for the 2A WIC. Cole Valley was led by Garrett Smith Garrett Smith 6'1" | SF Cole Valley Christian | 2021 State ID contributing 14 points. Melba was led by a balanced attack thanks to 18 points from Joe Reiber Joe Reiber 6'2" | SG Melba | 2022 State ID and a ridiculous stat line of 13 points and 21 rebounds from Cache Beus.
