Last week, I was able to attend two of the games from the Class 7A District 6 championship tournament taking place in and around the Orlando/Clermont area. This district is top heavy, with heavy hitter Windermere sitting happily on top of the rankings and easily capturing the district trophy at the end of the week. Nevertheless, the other teams in the district are not ones to be forgotten. There were some serious standouts for all of the teams competing!
Here’s the breakdown of how the two games I watched panned out:
East Ridge v. Haines City, 67-52 East Ridge wins
Windermere v. Kissimmee-Osceola, 49-41 Windermere wins (District Championship)
Here were the frontcourt standouts for these four teams:
Ty Gustafson, East Ridge, 6’3″
Gustafson was a welcome surprise for me as a scout going to Haines City v. East Ridge. I knew that neither of these schools had a stellar season, so it’s safe to say my expectations were heavily tempered going into this match. Gustafson was a real standout in the game who had one hell of a night. Gustafson was able to extend his range and knock down some deep threes, as well as hit some mid-range jumpers with ease. He also was able to utilize a bit of his height advantage to get some easy buckets in the post. He even was able to throw down a “dunk” (I’ll give it to him) in the rout of Haines City. Gustafson may be the Orlando prospect you’ve never heard of and could make some noise in the future.
Sean Stewart Sean Stewart 6'8" | PF Montverde | 2023 State #11 Nation FL , Windermere, 6’8″, 2023
No doubt, Stewart is one of Florida’s most intriguing prospects in the whole state, not just his class. Stewart, like a good deal of his Windermere teammates, had a rough outing against Osceola. Nevertheless, he still made a tangible impact on the game, with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Stewart had some rotation issues on defense and was getting scored on by smaller guards, but added 3 big blocks to make up for some of his defensive woes. Sean did show that if you foul him, he can probably still put points up, scoring 5 of his point from free throws on 8 attempts. He’s a big and athletic forward who can put anyone in the rim if he needs to, and when he’s in pique form, can be almost impossible to stop.
David Roc, Osceola, 6’4″, 2021
Roc was a huge spark for the Kowboys down the stretch. He finished a good deal of buckets down the stretch, both extending into the mid-range jumper and getting good old fashioned post buckets, even against a much larger Windermere squad. Roc was an effective defender as well, creating a tough environment down low. He is lanky and can extend his range, stretching the floor and adding height to an Osceola who definitely needed it.
