While the city may be small, the basketball was big, both in size of players and competition! This district had some very close games, which I got to see two of! Here were the results:
Mainland vs. New Smyrna Beach, 60-32 Mainland wins
Forest vs. Wekiva, 41-37 Forest wins
Forest went on to beat Mainland, 68-62, to win the District Championship and are still in the state tournament. Here were the biggest standouts in the backcourt!
Jalen Willis Jalen Willis 5'10" | PG Mainland | 2021 State FL , Mainland, 5’11″, 2021
Willis was a threat from everywhere on the floor in Mainland’s dominant win against New Smyrna Beach. Willis was able to score on all three levels, getting easy mid-ranges and getting to his spots, knocking down some deep triples, and slicing his way to the cup possession after possession. Willis had 22, with 17 in the second half, to lead Mainland in the win. He proved to be a threat to other guards and anyone who tries to guard him. His basketball career at the high school level is over, but he left on a high note, with an electrifying performance.
Calvin Davison Calvin Davison 5'10" | CG St. John Lutheran | 2022 State FL , Forest, 5’10″, 2022
Forest is a fantastic team on the defensive end of the floor and is one of the largest teams that has ever come out of Ocala. However, they really struggle to put the ball in the basket consistently. Davison has been a consistent guard threat off the bench this season for one reason: kid can shoot the ball. He had 3 huge threes over his two district championship games, getting them in key situations and extending or changing the lead in the Wildcats favor many times. He’s a pure shooter (47% on the season) who has been nothing but positive for Forest this year, and will continue to be in the future.
Ryan Weeks, New Smyrna Beach, 6’0″, 2022
Weeks is a baller. New Smyrna Beach, not as much. In a dreary performance against a physically superior and talented Mainland team, there were few things to be excited about. Ryan Weeks is one of them. Weeks plays head down basketball and puts the ball in the basket whenever he needs to. Weeks scored 13 of the ’Cudas 32 points, all on pull up jumpers that showed Weeks’ ability to get to his spots. He can get himself to anywhere on the floor and seems to be effective from all of those spots as well. Weeks will be the go-to guy for New Smyrna Beach next season, so keep an eye out for what is sure to be a great season for him.
