Goodpasture handily dispatched of Webb, advancing to the Regional Finals.
Freest of Throwers
Evan Eursher Evan Eursher 6'2" | PG Webb-Bell Buckle | 2022 State #244 Nation TN lived at the free throw line. Even the college-level talent Goodpasture ran out could not keep EE from getting into dangerous spots, thus necessitating fouls.
On the other half, P.J. Smith continued to be the “line leader” by constantly sidling up to the very same stripe. P.J. makes problems for guards. Often, Smith was guarded by Eursher. Unlike Eursher, Smith did not need to have a 25 or 30 point game for his team to win.
Gaga for Shegog
Every once in awhile a player sacks the game in the face, and humiliates everybody else in the gym with his game. Late in the third quarter, Xavier Shegog Xavier Shegog 6'6" | PF Mt. Vernon | 2024 State GA followed a layup miss with a rim-rocking two-handed boom. The fans on hand loved it as did he. On the very next defensive play, Shawn McKenzie attempted a corner three-pointer in modest transition. Shegog, coming from under the basket, screamed and soared his way out to the corner to whack away the attempt. Two special plays within 15 seconds for an outstanding young talent.
GHS ended the third quarter up 47-31.
Isaiah West Isaiah West 6'3" | SG Goodpasture | 2023 State #216 Nation TN played exceptional throughout the opening half. He hit all of the open shots. He distributed to fellow guards. The intensity was appropriately high and the composure was wonderful. West was not dramatically better than EE and the many college prospects on the hardwood, but he was certainly the most productive.
New Blood
Stephen Olowoniyi is the real deal. Tall, thin, tremendously athletic. Olowoniyi moved to Bell Buckle from Florida recently. At a legitimate 6-foot-6, his impact on the team and throughout the state will be tremendous. Olowoniyi high-pointed freshman bruiser Xavier Shegog Xavier Shegog 6'6" | PF Mt. Vernon | 2024 State GA at the rim in the first half.
Next Wave
Both Webb and Goodpasture play eighth graders. Webb’s Arnett Hayes played a meaningful role in the clattering of two DII-A giants. Arnett carved up the defense and earned his way to the free throw line a big. His quickness is wonderful for any guard. There will be plenty of high school success in his next few years.
Goodpasture gets some minutes from King Keary. King didn’t play much in the blowout win, though he is an exciting talent with poise and touch from deep.
