Here’s a look at some of the standouts from the weekend:
Devan Mcewen Devan Mcewen 6'3" | SG Lebo | 2021 State KS , senior, Lebo:
McEwen has turned in a lot of great performances in his career. But his work in the 39-37 win over Olpe stands out. First of all, to knock off such a deep and talented foe is an accomplishment in and of itself. But McEwen was held to just four points in the previous game with Olpe, and he wasn’t about to let himself be shut down again. He scored 28 of his team’s 39 points – no one on his team scored more than 6 points. Not that McEwen isn’t a good team guy. He is. But he wasn’t about to let his team go down to rival Olpe again.
Chris Dixon, senior, Junction City:
Junction City has had to go without star guard Howard Johnson Howard Johnson 6'0" | SG Junction City | 2022 State KS for several games. Dixon has stepped up to provide a scoring punch. For a long, rangy athlete who excels in the lane, Dixon has a deadly perimeter touch as well. The 6-foot-4 senior scored 21, including five 3-pointers, in a win over Topeka High. His two previous contests saw him put up 23 against Carroll and 17 against Topeka West.
Wyatt Lange, senior, Clifton-Clyde
The 6-foot-6 center turned in another good one Friday with 17 points in a win over Frankfort. The Eagles are making a run at the Twin Valley League title, and Lange is playing like one of the best big men in the league. He has games of 26 against Axtell and 21 against Sylvan-Lucas.
Lafe Blevins, senior, Doniphan West:
Blevins has been consistently productive for the Mustangs, who continue an up and down season. One nice thing to have is a point guard who is sure with the ball and automatic at the line. Friday Blevins knocked down 7-7 free throws to finish with 18 in a win over Blue Valley-Randolph.
Landon Boss, sophomore, Osage City:
Boss is a dynamic complement to seniors Gunnar Fort and Shane Orender, providing a consistent scoring threat. The 6-foot-1 sophomore hadn’t scored over 20 in several weeks. But he produced 21 in a win over Santa Fe Trail.
Maddox Decker Maddox Decker 5'9" | PG Santa Fe Trail | 2021 State KS , senior, Santa Fe Trail:
The one player to make the list in a losing effort, Decker did all he could in the 64-59 loss to Osage City. Decker hit three 3-pointers and finished with 28 in the loss. It was his sixth game with at least 21 points this season.
Dawson Zenger Dawson Zenger 6'1" | CG Rock Creek | 2021 State KS , senior, Rock Creek:
If we’re listing players with high point totals, we might as well get Zenger on the list. He routinely goes for 20-plus, and Friday was no different. Matched against Wamego and Tanner Hecht Tanner Hecht 6'5" | CG Wamego | 2021 State KS , Zenger scorched the nets for 26 in the 51-43 win. He has eight game with at last 26 points this year.
Brady Klotz Brady Klotz 6'4" | SF Royal Valley | 2022 State KS , junior, Royal Valley:
Klotz has suddenly become a threat to go for big scoring numbers. The rugged 6-foot-4 forward does everything well, but just isn’t often called upon to score in bulk, But after scoring no more than 12 in any contest this season, he suddenly has gone for over 20 two games in a row. After tossing in 27 against Chapman, the junior tallied 23 against Mission Valley Friday.
Jackson Showalter, senior, Wellsville:
The 6-1 guard has been consistently good for the Eagles this season. He produces against some of the toughest opponents, and he popped in 18 against Baldwin Friday.
Damian Foster, senior, Waverly:
Foster is fiding his grove for the Bulldogs. After tossing in 20 recently against Burlingame, he stuck in three 3-pointers and finished with 19 against Southern Coffey.
Miles Kitselman, senior, Lyndon:
One guy who didn’t lead his team in scoring Friday, but who made a huge impact was Kitselman. In a blowout of Cair Paravel, Kitselman dominated the paint and showed that he is athletic enough to run the floor with much smaller players. The 6-foot-5 football standout is also a great passer from the lane and on outlets. He tallied 15 in the 71-41 runaway.
