Cade Rohwer, Alta-Aurelia High School- Senior Forward/Center
The Warriors leading scorer, Rohwer, would total 19.9 points per game to go along with 9.6 boards per contest on 61.9% from the field. Didn’t shoot the ball much from the perimeter throughout the season, but has good length on the interior and strength to finish through contact. Athleticism is not lacking in his 6’5 frame and that only helps offensively and defensively. Alta-Aurelia would end up falling to Sioux Central in their second round substate game, and keeping Rohwer at bay with only 11 points on 5 shots was a big key for the Rebels’ victory.
Bo Clausen, Ridge View High School- Senior Forward
Not many players can claim the title of lead FG% and 3pt% on their respective teams, but Clausen is one of them. An efficient scorer who led his team in scoring all year at 16.7 points per game. Clausen does really well to contribute to the team and put in positive minutes and is a non-mistake guy, he only totaled 18 turnovers all year for a successful team in Ridge View. Clausen was obviously a focal defending point in their second round substate loss to East Sac County as he only totaled 9 points for his team in a 4 point loss to the Raiders.
Eli Kading, ACGC High School- Senior Wing
A team that sort of surprised in Class 2A, ACGC proved to have a solid core that including their leading scorer Eli Kading (15.3). Kading does a little bit everything on the basketball court as he can stretch the floor but he can also use his 6’2 frame to score inside around the basket. A player who knows where the ball needs to go and a big reason the Chargers had a well flowing offense. ACGC went down to a tough Panorama team in the substate second round, and the Panthers held Kading in check finishing the game with 6 total points but he did contribute 5 assists.
Jacob Herold, South Winneshiek High School- Senior Guard
The lead guard for the Warriors often times had an eye-opening game against favored Wapsie Valley in the second round of substate ending the night with 29 points, and he’s a big reason his team is still playing this late in the season. Leading his team in points (15.3) and assists (2.9), Herold can shoot from the perimeter but prefers to get in the lane and make things happen that way with good body control. As has been mentioned, South Winneshiek will face off against Gladbrook-Reinbeck Saturday the 27th for a chance to move onto Wells Fargo and Herold will need to continue his strong play to do so.
Cane Schmitt, Woodbury Central High School- Senior Wing/Forward
The 6’5 Schmitt was impressive for me when I watched him earlier this year as he’s capable of stretching the floor on the perimeter, able to put the ball on the deck, but also has the ability to shoot over interior defenders. Schmitt overall on the season had 14.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game and possessed a 33% 3pt. He’s a smooth lefty, that added a nice element to this Wildcats team, but they would lose to a top 1A team in Gehlen Catholic in the substate second round game where Schmitt tallied 14 points for his team.
Brock Long, Pekin High School- Senior Guard
A smooth shooting stroke from the perimeter, Long led his team to a substate semifinal game and a regular season conference championship averaging 15 points per contest. He did more than score for his team as well as he’s a pretty good on-ball defender usually guarding the opposing team’s best perimeter player and helped the Panthers from the free throw line with an 82%FT percentage. Long would shoot 50% from 3 and score 15 points in their eventual season-ending loss to West Burlington.
Tharon Locure, Des Moines North High School- Senior Guard
A Senior guard who jumps off the page is Locure. Someone who, admittedly, should already have been in our rankings, will certainly find his first look in the rankings at the next update. Locure was the Polar Bears second leading scorer (20.7) and led the team in assists (3.3) and steals (2.4). A threat to shoot the ball from anywhere he can find space, Locure was a tough guard, especially paired with another dynamic scorer in Diondre Taylor Diondre Taylor 5'10" | PG North | 2021 State IA . Locure was a 36% 3pt shooter throughout the season. North was upended by a young Des Moines East team on Monday as Locure led all scorers with 25 points.
Noah Sandbothe, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln High School- Senior Forward
Admittedly, another player who probably should’ve seen his way into our rankings before now, but nonetheless will surely find his way in our next rankings update. Sandbothe is a key reason why the Lynx are a top 5 team in the state with the way he can control the paint, but also step out and help relieve pressure occasionally with an outside shot or the ability to drive the lane. The Midland signee has averaged 12.5 points per game this season to go along with 6.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. The Lynx will take on Sioux City West tonight, February 26th, on their path to reaching Wells Fargo and Sandbothe will be a big part of their success.
Joe Ingham, West Fork High School- Senior Center
On the same path of inside presence, Joe Ingham is a load inside for opposing defenses to account for. At 6’5, Ingham brings somewhat of a offensive lineman type of strength that allows him to get good post positioning as he uses nice finishing around the rim with both hands. Ingham doesn’t pose much of a threat from the perimeter, but can used effectively to set good screens to get his teammates open. West Fork will try to reach Wells Fargo as they face off with Lake Mills in a substate final, Saturday the 27th. Ingham will need to control the paint in order to neutralize the big men Lake Mills can throw out.
Dom Drent, Sioux City East- Senior Guard
A player in the state of Iowa who has kind of flown under-the-radar, but has put up numbers for more than just this year is Dom Drent. Drent reached a career milestone this year as he eclipsed the 1,000 point mark. Known for his shooting and on-ball defense, Drent is 3rd on his team in scoring (10.9), and does well to help facilitate the offense from the perimeter. The Black Raiders will face off with Southeast Polk in a top notch matchup tonight, February 26th to move on to the substate semi-final.
