There are a lot of good teams that are loaded with talent. on Wednesday everyone has a punchers chance of winning. Then we continue on Friday where anything can happen. The first 2 rounds will be played at home sites. Here is a look at the #1 seeds and who they have.
4A Juan Diego Catholic
Juan Diego has been in the mix in 4A for the past 3 years. Unfortunately they have fallen they have fallen to the eventual Champion all 3 years. In those three years the #1 seed has not gone on to win the hole thing. This could be the year.
Let’s start with their young big man. The Soaring Eagle went out of the country to find this talented 6’9 C Malick Diallo Malick Diallo 6'9" | C Wasatch Academy | 2024 State #131 Nation UT from Mali as they have always struggled against teams that have bigs. inside and can shoot a little bit from deep, so you can’t sag off of him too much. Their top player is Talon Valdes Talon Valdes 6'0" | PG Juan Diego | 2021 State UT who has been carving up defenses for the past 4 years. He is speedy and always finds ways to get in the lane. On the wings you have Matty Rodriguez and Jag Gill-Martin Jag Gill-Martin 6'6" | PF Juan Diego | 2021 State UT whom both provide outside shooting. Their SF’s Matt Rohden Matt Rohden 6'5" | SF Juan Diego | 2021 State UT and David Kinneberg David Kinneberg 6'6" | SF Juan Diego | 2021 State UT have been solid all year. David has been impressive with his soft touch and various moves inside.
5A Timpview High School
The T-Birds seem to be the only team in the state that started with the hype and has maintained it from day 1. One of the most impressive pieces of this team is their young wing player James Rust James Rust 6'5" | CG Timpview | 2023 State UT . James can elevate and hammer them down but he can also hit those contested three’s. He has been impressive off the bounce and the catch from outside. The T-Birds have one of the saviest two way players in the state in Coleman Ford Coleman Ford 5'10" | PG Timpview | 2021 State UT who seems to be everywhere on both ends of the floor. Coleman has great vision and he has been shooting the ball lights out as of late. Then we bring in the 6’8 G that will attend BYU after his 2-year Church Mission Jake Wahlin Jake Wahlin 6'8" | SF Timpview | 2021 State #150 Nation UT . This kid does it all. He blocks shots, hits three’s and catches lobs. This team is deep and will be tough to beat. With the various role players they have and their team oriented style of play, look for them to get on a role.
6A Westlake High School
This team was on an absolute tear this year and then they suffered a devastating loss when Hunter Phillips Hunter Phillips 6'9" | C Westlake | 2021 State UT got injured and will be out for the year. They had been playing inspired basketball after that loss as players like Noah Madsen and Noah McCord Noah McCord 6'3" | SG Westlake | 2021 State UT . While they had a commanding lead over every team in 6A things are a bit shaky for them as they ended the year loosing 2 straight. They are the most vulnerable 1 seed in the state tournament.
