Grand Island
Isaac Traudt Isaac Traudt 6'9" | SF Grand Island | 2022 State #45 Nation NELincoln East successfully executed two key things on defense against the Islanders: they limited Traudt’s breakaway transition opportunities, and their guards hounded the Islanders’ guards whether they had the ball or not. Traudt had a more difficult time than usual getting open jumpers and dunks. Traudt worked hard and early to earn post position. He had several cross cuts that found him open and successful seals when the defense was fronting him. The Islander ball-handlers were having significant difficulties getting him the ball with players such as Carter Glenn and Logan Shirk limiting passing lanes with active hands and feet. Traudt responded by bullying his way to the cup. Multiple Spartans would converge on his drive and he would shrug them off for the bucket or earn the foul, several times doing both. He fueled their fourth quarter comeback by getting to the free throw line practically every other possession. He had thirteen total attempts, sinking twelve. Traudt still managed 26 points and 10 rebounds despite the Spartans well-executed game-plan that secured them victory.
Lincoln East
Carter Glenn Carter Glenn 5'11" | PG Lincoln East | 2021 State NEIn two games, Glenn accumulated 36 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Against Grand Island, he might have slightly outplayed Isaac Traudt Isaac Traudt 6'9" | SF Grand Island | 2022 State #45 Nation NE . His defense was a key aspect of their win, especially his double-teams which were somewhat frequent, yet almost always caught the Islanders off-guard. A few times, he had swiped a steal and taken a step or two before the ball-handler reacted to it. He was patient on offense, yet aggressive when the opportunity presented itself. He found a few opportunities to push and when he gets to the rim with only one guy around, he finishes at a very high level. At the end of the third quarter, Grand Island began sending doubles and he calmly broke them each time. He is well-schooled in situational basketball. Omaha Central was better-built to match his burst and strength, but he had some great cutting off-ball and made some intuitive passes. The pass-before-the-pass types.
Brayden McPhail Brayden McPhail 5'10" | PG Lincoln East | 2022 State NEHis quickness caught Central off guard, and once he had that advantage he didn’t waste any time or let Central get back into the play with their athleticism. He moved the ball where it needed to go, or attacked the basket and caught the Eagles slipping with some late help. He’s comfortable finishing with both hands in traffic. He had 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists in that loss, and was 3/6 from three.
Omaha Central
Jayden Dawson Jayden Dawson 6'4" | CG Omaha Central | 2022 State NEDawson has a really nice shooting stroke. He’s hitting 40% of his three-point attempts. He’s listed at 6’4″ and has excellent length. The junior is a very fluid mover, and dangerous as a slasher, although I think he needs to attack and cut more often. The on-ball defense against Lincoln East really stood out to me. He can flip his hips and mirror his man, and absorbs contact well despite his thinner frame.
Bellevue East
Paul Schuyler
Schuyler was the engine for most of the Chieftains’ win, on offense and defense. The 5’10″ junior has nice footwork on defense and can maintain low position while moving quickly. I see some improvement needed in anticipating himself being screened and not dying so easily on them. I believe he has enough strength to fight through some of what I saw. He scored 15 points, but his passing powered the team to a double-digit victory. He puts some zip on them, and can sling it through all angles.
