The 15th annual Wally Keller Classic took place this weekend at Charlotte High with 15 varsity boys basketball games between two gyms on campus.
There were a lot of matchups and a slew of talent on hand.
Here is a look at the top standouts (Part 1) from Friday and Saturday. Our Orlando area writer Erik Young joined me to cover the action on Saturday and will release his notebook series this week.
Omar Figueroa Omar Figueroa 6'0" | PG Orlando Christian Prep | 2021 State FL , Ven-Allen Lubin Ven-Allen Lubin 6'7" | PF Orlando Christian Prep | 2022 State #57 Nation FL & AJ Brown AJ Brown 6'4" | CG Orlando Christian Prep | 2022 State FL │Orlando Christian Prep
There are endless reasons why Orlando Christian Prep is 19-0 and running red hot this season. 2021 6-0 guard Omar Figueroa Omar Figueroa 6'0" | PG Orlando Christian Prep | 2021 State FL averaged 20.0 PPG with 22 points on Friday night in a win over Charlotte and 18 points on Saturday night against Andrew Jackson. He is playing confidently as a deep ball shooter and an overall offensive setter as a point man.
—2022 6-7 guard/forward Ven-Allen Lubin Ven-Allen Lubin 6'7" | PF Orlando Christian Prep | 2022 State #57 Nation FL was equally as impressive averaging 15.5 PPG this weekend with 18 points on Friday. He makes it look easy as a slasher and his mix of length and ballhandling ability are hard to slow down on both ends of the floor. 2022 6-4 guard AJ Brown AJ Brown 6'4" | CG Orlando Christian Prep | 2022 State FL turned it on during a Saturday victory as he totaled 17 points and an early start with smooth attacks and jumpers. Orlando Christian Prep is full of no non-sense prospects who play well together.
Averaging just a tad over 20.0 PPG on the weekend, 2021 6-8 forward Tre Carroll Tre Carroll 6'7" | PF Charlotte | 2021 State #225 Nation FL surged for Charlotte. He dropped 24 points in Saturday night’s loss to Bishop McLaughlin. He is playing aggressively as an attacker, handling the rock and going out with full effort for his hometown program. Florida Atlantic is getting a good one this fall.
2021 East Lake guard Mikey Shane Mikey Shane 6'0" | CG East Lake | 2021 State FL broke a Wally Keller Classic record with nine 3’s in a convincing victory over Vero Beach. The 6-0 guard recorded 29 points and hit open 3-pointer after open 3-pointer to move his squad to 16-0. He’s excelling in the fast pace East Lake offense after transferring in from Countryside. Shane is one of the most underrated guards who plays with endless energy on both ends of the floor.
—Fellow Countryside transfer, 2021 6-4 guard Anthony Bittar Anthony Bittar 6'4" | CG East Lake | 2021 State FL and 2022 6-1 guard Noah Chatman Noah Chatman 6'1" | CG East Lake | 2022 State FL each had 13 points and went to the rack for big buckets in the opening half. 2021 6-4 guard Dean Gabrelcik Dean Gabrelcik 6'4" | CG East Lake | 2021 State FL didn’t need to score much in a game like this but he did it all as a passer and unselfish player.
Trailing at halftime, Bishop McLaughlin used a 19-1 third quarter run to move ahead of Charlotte for good in the game. 2022 6-8 forward Dillon Mitchell Dillon Mitchell 6'7" | PF Bishop McLaughlin | 2022 State #235 Nation FL cruised in the third quarter and made it happen for his side with good drives using all of his length to full success with 23 points. 2022 6-4 guard Emanuel Sharp Emanuel Sharp 6'5" | SG Bishop McLaughlin | 2022 State #104 Nation FL added 19 points as he shot it at a high clip and put the game away living at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Kevin “Boopie” Miller & Prince Mosengo Prince Mosengo 6'8" | PF Victory Rock | 2022 State #210 Nation FL │Victory Rock
The game of the weekend was between Victory Rock and Andrew Jackson as the latter won 63-60 late in a chippy and physical matchup. 2021 5-10 guard Kevin “Boopie” Miller might be the hardest working point guards in the state. With 19 points, he showed off his ability to run the show and finish in a variety of crafty ways. 2022 guard/forward Prince Mosengo Prince Mosengo 6'8" | PF Victory Rock | 2022 State #210 Nation FL is a lengthy prospect at 6-9 and he got better as the game moved on with his aggressiveness in route to 15 points.
Naples plays fast and unselfishly and it is super fun to watch. 2021 6-7 guard Tony Green Tony Green 6'6" | CG Naples | 2021 State FL had 24 points against Winter Haven on Saturday and was a natural in transition as a lengthy and athletic finisher. Guards, 2022 6-0 guard and 2021 5-10 guard Byntley Theork Byntley Theork 5'10" | PG Naples | 2021 State FL play so hard and both reached double digits in the two games this weekend.
