Top Performers: I Have A Dream MLK Challenge (Part 1)
In this article:
I took in parts of the three-day I Have A Dream Martin Luther King Jr. Challenge at Somerset Academy. The event is in its 3rd year and features some of the top teams in the South Florida area. Coordinator Marcus McGee does a tremendous job organizing the showcase, especially this year due to Covid-19.
Let’s look into my observations…
Jonathan Renois Jonathan Renois 6'0" | CG Somerset | 2021 State FL – Somerset Academy
2021 Jonathan Renois Jonathan Renois 6'0" | CG Somerset | 2021 State FL scored 34 points in defeat against Palmetto on Monday night. The 6-foot combo guard has exceptional stop-n-go acceleration as he drives to the basket. Moreover, Renois got to his spot and finished with multiple finger rolls off glass. He also hit from mid-range and knocked down multiple 3-pointers. Renois easily had the highest grade of any player for the Panthers in the final game of the challenge. He is an underrated talent that gets the most out of his frame.
Warner Davis Warner Davis 6'1" | CG Miami Palmetto | 2022 State FL – Palmetto
2022 Warner Davis Warner Davis 6'1" | CG Miami Palmetto | 2022 State FL was electric shooting the ball for the Panthers, especially in the first half. The 6-foot-1 guard scored 23 points and knocked down six 3-pointers. While Davis was unconscious shooting the basketball from deep, he did maneuver his way into the lane for a bucket at the rim. He was particularly effective shooting the rock from the corners of the floor. Davis is a kid you just can’t afford to leave open. I give the nod to the Killian transfer for the highest grade on Palmetto for the night.
Eros Carpio Eros Carpio 6'4" | CG Pine Crest | 2021 State FL – Pine Crest
2021 Eros Carpio Eros Carpio 6'4" | CG Pine Crest | 2021 State FL scored 18 points as the Panthers cruised to a 78-55 victory over Cypress Bay. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard/small forward used his size and athleticism to maneuver his way to the rim on multiple occasions. Carpio also finished on a pair of dunks coming off the baseline, an area Pine Crest exposed on Cypress Bay throughout the night. Back in December, I witnessed Carpio knock down four 3-pointers for 21 points against Sagemont. While I didn’t see Carpio shoot as much from deep, I thought he was solid in the mid-range and showcased himself as a three-level scorer off both performances. He is a really good player that complements the Thompson twins well.
Jose Amat Jose Amat 5'9" | CG Florida Christian | 2022 State FL III – Florida Christian
On Friday, Jose Amat Jose Amat 5'9" | CG Florida Christian | 2022 State FL III helped the Patriots to a big victory over Miami Norland. The 5-foot-9 point guard scored 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Moreover, five of those field goals were from deep. The shifty floor leader was also credited with zero turnovers against the Vikings. The win gave Florida Christian its first-ever victory over Miami Norland. Amatt III is averaging 10.6 points per game while shooting a superb 58 percent from 3-point range.
Jordan Hinds Jordan Hinds 6'3" | SF Cypress Bay | 2021 State FL – Cypress Bay
Like many others, the Lightning fell into an early hole against Pine Crest. A bright spot was the play of Jordan Hinds Jordan Hinds 6'3" | SF Cypress Bay | 2021 State FL . The 6-foot-4 forward scored a team-high 17 points and fought all night. Hinds has pretty good size and athleticism to make plays around the glass. Furthermore, he moves well in transition for his frame. You can take a look at some of his season highlights by clicking here.
