The South Dakota Tuesday Night Match-Up!
In this article:
What are South Dakota’s top games and who are the top players/prospects to know in this games? PHD gives you are a rundown before tip off.
Potter County at Mobridge-Pollock. The 10th ranked Tigers from Mobridge-Pollock are 5-0 with quality wins over Sisseton and Ellendale (among others) on their way to 5-0. Tonight they play their toughest test to date when they welcome the 8th ranked team in Class B, Potter County. The Battlers – who have good size in Class B – are undefeated with an overtime win over Warner.
Featured Prospect Match-Up: Dylan Drew Dylan Drew 6'5" | PF Potter County | 2021 State SD (6’5 Sr C of PC) vs Caelan McCollam (6’4 Jr PF of M-P). McCollam is the longest, tallest player on the Tigers and they made need his length to battle the 6-foot-5 Drew. Dylan moves well up and down as well as agility wise so Caelan may have to use his ability to get up the floor to quickly battle. If not Caeelan, you could see Zane Reinert battle Drew. Reinert will give up almost a half a foot but he is a good player that competes hard.
Chamberlain at Winner. Chamberlain (ranked 9th in Class A) is out to prove they are the top team in Region 6 (Mobridge-Pollock is the other top contender) while Winner is the top squad in Region 7. Most of Region 7 hasn’t played a game yet but Winner is 5-1 and out to prove they are a top ten squad. They can get a step towards that goal with a win over ranked Chamberlain.
Featured Prospect Match-Up: Cameron Caldwell Cameron Caldwell 6'2" | SG Chamberlain | 2021 State SD (6’1 Sr Guard of the Cubs) vs Brady Fritz Brady Fritz 6'2" | SG Winner | 2021 State SD (6’2 Sr Guard of Winner). Drayton Priebe Drayton Priebe 6'1" | PG Chamberlain | 2021 State SD is going to be heavily involved here too but Cameron Caldwell Cameron Caldwell 6'2" | SG Chamberlain | 2021 State SD is off to a great start. He’s had a couple double-doubles including a 23 and 10 game. Caldwell is coming off a 16 per game season and at 200 pounds he’s going to play a few spots. He will run into Fritz, one of the elite players in the state. Brady is a great athlete who scores inside-out plus he boards. Priebe and Caldwell will try and limit Fritz.
Vermillion at Tea Area. A top ten match-up between undefeated Vermillion – a team that we think is very good and belongs in the top 2-3 in state – and Tea Area who has only played top five level squads and two of those games were one score losses. And one of them was a buzzer beater that the entire sport world has seen! After tonight Tea Area will have played four games and all four of them will have been against top five squads. Second ranked Vermillion is out to prove they are an elite team while 6th ranked Tea Area wants to get a win.
Featured Prospect Match-Up: Cael Lundin Cael Lundin 6'3" | SG Tea Area | 2022 State SD (6’2 Jr Guard of Tea) vs Jakob Dobney Jakob Dobney 6'0" | PG Vermillion | 2021 State SD (6’4 Sr Wing of Vermillion). You may not see Lundin and Dobney on one another the full game but these are players that their teams need to do a lot. Dobney has to score, create some, and board. Lundin is the lone Tea Area player that can create his own shot when things break down. The two versatile all league talents.
Langford Area at Redfield. Langford Area entered the top ten this week at number ten. The Lions are 4-0 having battled their way to an undefeated start including a nice win over Ipswich. The Pheasants are 3-1 having battled their way through three one score games plus a blowout win over G-V. This will be a very good test for Langford to see if they are truly a top ten squad and truly the top Region 1 squad.
Featured Prospect Match-Up: Peyton Osborn (5’10 Jr guard of Redfield) vs Colin Frey Colin Frey 6'0" | SG Langford Area | 2021 State SD (6’0 Sr Guard of Langford Area). Osborn and Frey are the two backcourt playmakers: Langford relies on Frey to be a scorer and a playmaker while Osborn is the second leading scorer for the Pheasants.
SF Washington at SF Lincoln. Washington has knocked off previous top ranked Roosevelt earning the top ranking in Class AA basketball. They have to defend that ranking against a Lincoln squad that started slow – lost their first three – but have since upset Brandon Valley and outlasted Pierre. Lincoln looks for another resume victory tonight when they host the Warriors.
Featured Prospect Match-Up: Surafel Berhanie (6’3 Sr Guard of SFL) vs Akok Aguer (6’2 Sr Guard of SFW). One of the stories of the young season is Surafel Berhanie putting up numbers and leading the Patriots in their recent wins. Berhanie hit four threes and scored 23 in the Patriots in the Brandon Valley upset and then 19 versus Pierre. Next up on pajama night? Good friend Akok Aguer who has exploded for a couple big performances for Washington.
