Jayden Lazard Jayden Lazard 6'0" | CG Opelousas | 2021 State LA | 2021 | 6’0’’ Point Guard | Opelousas HS
Lazard was the best player on the floor in the midst of the Opelousas win over Patterson. He showed his ability to drive the paint, post up smaller guards, and shoot from the outside. Lazard even displayed his hops with the alley-oop he caught from JonQuarius McGhee JonQuarius McGhee 6'3" | CG Opelousas | 2021 State LA . His 23 point effort was big in helping the Tigers advance and eventually win the Holiday Shootout at St. Martinville.
JonQuarius McGhee JonQuarius McGhee 6'3" | CG Opelousas | 2021 State LA | 2021 | 6’3’’ Point Guard | Opelousas HS
McGee was as advertised during the Patterson win. He was the spark in the Tigers 30 point quarter that broke the game open. McGee began the game with an And-1 opportunity from a steal and had two other steal and dunk finishes. He also distributed the ball to others for several assist showing his versatility. His point guard display showed why Opelousas is a major threat to the 4A title.
Allen Walker | 2021 | 6’1’’ Combo Guard | New Iberia HS
Walker was part of a Yellowjacket backcourt that made it extremely hard for Westgate to make any headway during their contest. Walker closes space with whoever he is defending and makes it hard to execute passes. He scored layups off of turnover created by his teammates. Walker is also crafty enough to get to the rack as well. His 16 point effort was part of a NISH win that saw four players in double figures. He will be very valuable for the Yellowjackets heading into district play.
Jaterrius Fusilier Jaterrius Fusilier 6'1" | CG New Iberia | 2021 State LA | 2021 | 6’2’’ Combo Guard | New Iberia HS
Fusilier was the other half of the backcourt duo that made it miserable for Westgate guards. He had the highlight of the game with a crossover three ball he drained which left his defender off balance. While he scored 19 points, it was his defense that was what helped make the margin what it was. His constant hounding of the point guard and creating turnovers was a major reason for the victory. Fusilier, in his senior season, has a mature game that some would like to emulate.
Braiden Wagner | 2022 | 6’1’’ Combo Guard | Peabody Magnet HS
Wagner got off to a slow start scoirng four points in the first half. During the second half, he was all over the floor. Offensively, he took advantage of being left open after loose balls and made mid-range jumpers and floaters. He even made a three to extend the Warhorses lead. Wagner identifies with the Peabody defensive history and made smart defensive plays. In this low scoring affair, his production was much needed.
Zytarious Mortle | 2021 | 6’2’’ Point Guard | Peabody Magnet HS
Mortle is a little different from the previous Peabody point guards I have seen. He is a guard who was stronger than everyone who defended him last Sunday. He gets to the paint while brushing off all types of contact. That is also where he scored his points. His ten point game was a product of showing he was the bigger guy and finishing strong at the offensive end. Mortle was key in Peabody defeating St. Martinville and should be a fixture for them in their success this seaon.
Kashie Natt Kashie Natt 6'2" | SG Rayville | 2021 State LA | 2021 | 6’2’’ Wing | Rayville HS
Rayville came away with a tough four point, overtime victory against Captain Shreve during the BTW (Shreveport) Holiday Shootout. Natt was his usual, hard-nosed self scoring and rebounding all he could. His double-double was a product of him tracking rebounds on both backboards while finding ways to score after making his first three. The Hornets needed everything Natt gave them on Monday afternoon. He will have to provide the same production going forward.
D’evin McDonald | 2022 | 6’3’’ Combo Guard | Red River HS
The Red River lefty went to work against Airline on Tuesday night with a game high 22 points. He was the person making three pointers to give them their big lead. Then, when Airline made a charge in the second half, he made a key three and layup to halt the surge. McDonald can score in and outside of the paint and showed that he is hard to stop offensively. A solid outing for this Bulldog combo guard.
With the end of the football championships in Louisiana, we will get to see more and more teams add their football players to their basketball rosters. Larger districts have district games starting as well. These two factors should lead to some pretty good hoops as the season makes its way towards the playoffs.
