The Arizona MLK Classic on January 16-18 had a number of shooters who showed they can really fill it up. This report takes a look at the sharpest shooters.
6’1 SG Matthew Brand of Modesto Christian HS (CA) 2021 (Arsenal 17 Brown 1)
Brand is one of the most confident shooters you will see. He is a master at the catch and shoot and has a pretty quick release. He moves well without the ball and is able to create open space to get the shot off (quickly).
6’3 SG Malachi Douyon of Pacific Collegiate School (CA) 2022 (Arsenal KP 17 2)
Douyon is one of the more athletic shooters out there and he has other skills in his offensive package which makes him quite attractive. He moves well without it and has a quick release on the catch and shoot. And he wants the ball in his hands at money time.
6’1 SG Connor Drinkwine Connor Drinkwine 6'2" | SG Emerald Ridge | 2021 State WA of Emerald Ridge HS (WA) 2021 (Wash. Supreme Purple)
Drinkwine checks all the boxes as a bona-fide shooter. He has a great-looking shot, he takes good shots, he has a quick release and some range. He can shoot it off the bounce or the catch and shoot. Use him as your demonstrator at your shooting clinic.
6’7 SG Jack Lerner of Hillcrest Prep (AZ) 2021 (Ascending Life)
Lerner “showed out” at this event. In addition to his other skills and being able to play multiple positions he was money from way downtown. He can really shoot it with LONG range. And he shoots it well off the dribble or catch and shoot.
6’7 W Quinn Patterson of Mount Si HS (WA) 2022 (Team Lavine MS)
If there is an MVP of the all-shooter team Patterson is an easy choice. While developing other parts of his game nicely he has consistently shown that he is an ELITE shooter. He is the second coming of Kay Thompson in a lot of ways.
6’2 SG Matthew Ruegge of Kingsburg HS (CA) 2022 (Arsenal 17 Brown 2)
Ruegge is a guy who can really fill it up for a couple reasons: He has a very good-looking shot (form) and he takes good shots. And he believes every shot he takes is going in. You can’t leave him or he will bury you.
6’2 SG Damian Ruiz of Murrieta Valley HS (CA) 2022 (Gamepoint Supreme 17)
Ruiz is most effective as a pull-up shooter, both in transition and in the half court. He can get shots on his own or within a system which makes him a very nice fit on any team. And he wants to take the big shot when the game is on the line.
