Continue ReadingGarland, Texas is a city in Dallas County that is loaded with talent and highly regarded prospects, even a few top-ranked players in the state, as well as the nation. This city is emerging with teams stacked with underclassmen that have been making a lot of noise throughout the metroplex and are likely going to become the future of high school basketball in Dallas. Here are just a few of the stand out athletes from week 10 in Garland, from the games I had the opportunity to witness.
Naaman Forest 68 vs South Garland 60
| Justin Whitmore Justin Whitmore 6'7" | PF Naaman Forest | 2022 State TX | Power Forward | Naaman Forest HS | 2022 |
6-foot-6-inch forward with a skill set that can translate to both forward positions, and a wide body that can cover and clog space in the lane. Justin was all over the floor making plays for his team both offensively and defensively, displaying good explosiveness and power in every aspect of the game. Whitmore played with aggression, he wasn’t afraid to get physical or battle for position or for the ball, snatching rebounds off the glass with ferocity. The Naaman Forest forward also showed some versatility with the speed and quickness to defend guards out on the perimeter, and the length, size, and strength to play down in the post. The South Garland Colonels could not match the size or length of Whitmore, so he used it well to his advantage, sealing guys off down low to receive the ball. On their first possession of the second half, Justin established a strong base in the center of the paint, he got the ball then proceeded to drop step and throw down a rim rocking, monstrous, two-handed slam dunk. Minutes later he swatted away a mid-range floater sending it towards half-court before chasing the ball down, and taking it all the way to the house for another thunderous dunk, showing off his athleticism and sheer dominance. Justin Whitmore Justin Whitmore 6'7" | PF Naaman Forest | 2022 State TX finished this game with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocks.
| Coleman Craddock | Shooting Guard | Naaman Forest HS | 2022 |
Coleman Craddock contributed to his team’s success by dropping 16 points and picking up 3 rebounds and 2 assists along the way. The young man displayed dangerous penetration skills, he blew by the defense and got to the rack with ease when coming downhill full speed. Craddock was incredible when playing in an up-tempo style of pace. Coleman showed impressive use and control of his speed with the ball, he broke South Garland’s full-court press defense by himself, taking it all the way to the rack untouched on a number of occasions. Remarkable breakaway speed, the Junior guard accelerated, picked up speed in a hurry, and never slowed down. Coleman Craddock got open in transition by leaking out anytime a shot went up, you cannot let him get behind your defense for even one second because once he gets a step or two ahead of his man there was no stopping him from taking it all the way to the basket.
| Dvon Turner | Point Guard | South Garland HS | 2024 |
Dvon Turner made his return to the floor against Naaman Forest and he didn’t disappoint. Turner was full of energy and ready to get after it, he ended up dropping a team-high 20 points, along with 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. This lefty has some shiftiness to his game, he showed a knack for getting his opponent leaning and off-balance. Dvon knew exactly how to get to his spots and create space with no more than two or three dribbles. The true Freshman was simply outstanding, especially in the first half where he played extremely aggressive on both ends of the court, locking down on defense, forcing turnovers and capitalizing off of them, knocking down 3-point shots from all around the arc, getting to the basket, absorbing and scoring through contact, drawing fouls, and bringing great energy, just doing any and everything it took to gain and maintain the lead. Although they fell short of the victory, Dvon Turner showed a lot of promise.
| Brandon Nave | Point Guard | South Garland HS | 2023 |
Brandon Nave’s shooting from deep kept his team alive late in the fourth quarter. The Sophomore sharpshooter showed up and showed out when it mattered most, nailing two big-time 3-point shots in 3 possessions to bring his team within 3 points in the closing minutes of the game. This clutch performer displayed deep range, hitting his jump shots from 5 to 10 feet beyond the arc. Nave shot the ball with no fear and great concentration, even when being contested he didn’t alter or change his shot one bit, he stuck to his game. Brandon Nave seems like the type of player that wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line, his late-game heroics nearly changed the outcome of this contest. With that type of mentality, you will be hearing his name a lot throughout the next couple of years.
