In this piece, we break down the performances of the SoCal-based players who attended the event in Arizona.
Denim Dawson Denim Dawson 6'5" | SF Orange Lutheran | 2021 State CA-S , Orange Lutheran – Highlight-reel type of athlete who is best when slashing and finishing in transition. Has explosive pop in his legs which allows him to rise up and finish over rim protectors with authority. The 6-foot-5 wing handles it well enough to get by defenders in the half-court and get into the paint where he can put pressure on the rim. Has lots of potential as an on-ball defender and must improve as a perimeter shooter.
Ian Jones, Sonora – Tough and hard-nosed defender who can guard 1-3 on the high school level. Very good rebounder for his size and position due to his strength and fundamental box-out approach. Offensively is a knockdown three-point shooter from the corners and wings, especially with time and space. Can attack open driving lanes in a straight-line fashion and finish at the rim.
Jayson Wiltz, Hillcrest – Long and smooth three-level scorer whose change of speed and direction makes him a shifty guard who is tough to cover. Wiltz is a high level competitor who didn’t allow the showcase atmosphere to change that. He made the right basketball play more often than not and didn’t try to do things outside of his comfort zone. Wiltz is a consistent shooter from three-point range, but also has a smooth pull-up game from the 13 to 17 foot area.
Jaden Winfield, Riverside King – Another freakish athlete who is new to the west coast, Winfield is an intriguing long-term prospect because of his size, versatility, and explosiveness in both the transition and half-court settings. The 6-foot-5 wing is best as a slasher and finisher where he uses his strength and ability to stop and rise on a dime to finish off powerful drives to the rim. Winfield can knock down the open jump shot, but prefers to get downhill and into the paint.
