Here are some performances by northeast Kansas’ unsung heroes from Jan. 21 (in alphabetical order):
Jordan Barnard, junior, Olpe:
The 6-foot-1 guard isn’t really an unsung hero, but he’s just one of many players who on any given night might provide the spark for the Eagles. Olpe is starting to assert its dominance in 1A. The entered the week ranked #3 in the Division I classification. They whipped Madison, then utterly shut down #4 ranked Lebo, winning 41-28. Barnard led the way with 15 points.
Grant Cleavinger, junior, Lawrence:
The #2 ranked Lions aren’t just Zeke Mayo Zeke Mayo 6'4" | CG Lawrence | 2021 State KS . The Tulane-baseball signee Cleavenger hit six shots for 12 points in a blowout of Olathe East.
Jake Fritz, junior, Wamego:
The fearless shooter is finding the range for #9 (4A) Wamego. His ability to stretch defenses is going to do wonders for the Red Raiders, particularly versatile scorer Tanner Hecht Tanner Hecht 6'5" | CG Wamego | 2021 State KS . Fritz buried four 3-pointers against Eudora for 16 points. He had 18 against Marysville last week.
Chase Harris Chase Harris 6'2" | CG Wichita Heights | 2022 State KS on, senior, Madison:
The Bulldogs have had a tough week, having to take on 1A powers Lebo and Olpe. The got back on the win column Thursday with a blowout of Marais des Cygnes Valley. The 6-foot-1 senior Harrison, who really isn’t an unsung hero considering all the big performances he’s had in the past, connected on five 3-pointers on his way to 19 points.
Matthew Lierz, sophomore, Holton:
Holton has been improving rapidly, winning three in a row. Lierz stepped up in Thursday’s win against Metro Academy. The 5-foot-11 Lierz is a sharp-shooter, having his nearly 40% from deep as a freshman. He canned three 3-pointers Thursday, tallying 11 points.
Danny Moylan, senior, St Marys:
The Bears have so many players to throw at opponents. Ranked #5 in 3A, they can send wave after wave of talented and versatile players to team with big man Fred Criqui Fred Criqui 6'7" | C St. Marys | 2022 State KS . Suddenly rising to the fore is 6-foot guard Moylan, who hadn’t scored in double figures before this week. He canned four 3-pointers against Hiawatha, then came back with five 3’s against Atchison for 15 points.
Jackson Rader, senior Marysville:
Marysville fell to Nemaha Central Thursday, but the performance of the senior guard Rader merits mention. He has been a consistent performer and deadly 3-point threat for the Bulldogs. Thursday he his a season high five 3-pointers.
