Continue ReadingJanuary tournaments present opportunities for teams from across the state, and sometimes from vastly different classifications, to face off. Top teams get to challenge themselves. The #2 team in 2A – Olpe – went toe to toe with the #2 team in 4A – Mulvane. And undefeated Lebo finally met its match in Burlingame.
Here are some of the top performances in the area from Jan. 19:
Trever Quaney, junior, Burlingame:
The Bearcats handed Lebo – #4 in 1A Div I – it’s first loss of the year 43-42. The 6-foot-7 Quaney led the way with 12 points for Burlingame, a tad below his average 15 per game.
Devan Mcewen Devan Mcewen 6'3" | SG Lebo | 2021 State KS , senior, Lebo:
McEwen is the constant for Lebo. He is averaging 22.6 per game, but went for 30 in the loss to Burlingame, his second 30-plus game this year. The loss doesn’t change the fact Lebo will be a team to reckon with come playoff time.
Luke Detwiler, senior, Lyndon:
Mulvane’s Trey Abasolo Trey Abasolo 6'1" | CG Mulvane | 2021 State KS went for 19 and freshman Kaiden Abasolo knocked down five 3-pointers. And it took it all to put down the #2 team in 2A, the Lyndon Tigers. Detwiler, a 6-foot guard led the deep and talented Tigers with 18 points.
Tanner Hecht Tanner Hecht 6'5" | CG Wamego | 2021 State KS , senior, Wamego (pictured):
The #9 team in 4A, Wamego took just its second loss of the year. Bonner Springs knocked off the Red Raiders 53-44. Wamego got Hecht’s best effort in the loss. He popped for 30, his second 30-plus outing of the year, knocking down five 3-pointers.
Derek Hoelting, junior, Olpe:
Ranked #3 in 1A Div 1, Olpe crushed a tough Madison team. The Eagles have so many talented, experienced options, and they are putting things together after a state championship football season. Against Madison, it was Hoelting leading the way with 13 points.
Shane Orender, senior, Osage City:
The Indians improved to 6-2 and Orender is really developing into a third scoring option. The 5-foot-10 guard tallied 12 against Council Grove, 13 against Chase County, and hit five 3-pointers en route to 17 in a blowout of Central Heights.
Avery Gatzemeyer Avery Gatzemeyer 6'1" | PG Valley Falls | 2022 State KS , junior, Valley Falls:
After averaging 14 points per game as a sophomore, the 6-foot-2 guard hasn’t been scoring in big bunches lately. But Tuesday he drilled eight 3-pointers and racked up 28 against Horton.
