Since 1981, 18 of the winners of this award have gone on to be drafted in the NBA. It has been won by legends such as Chris Webber, Terry Mills, Cassius Winston, Glen Rice, and Sam Vincent. Last year, Benton Harbor’s Scooby Johnson took home the honor. With the parameters around this season, the Mr. Basketball award will be tougher than normal to determine. We have been introducing some of the candidates for the award this season.
Mr. Basketball Candidate: Kobe Bufkin Kobe Bufkin 6'4" | SG Grand Rapids Christian | 2021 State #71 Nation MI
Mr. Basketball Candidate: Pierre Brooks Pierre Brooks 6'5" | SG Detroit Douglass | 2021 State #76 Nation MI
Julian Roper Julian Roper 6'4" | PG St. Mary's Prep | 2021 State #137 Nation MI is an incredibly talented point guard from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. Prep Hoops Michigan has him ranked at number 4 in Michigan in the class of 2021. Prep Hoops ranks at number 137 in the country among the senior class. Roper will be attending and playing for Northwestern at the next level.
Roper has had an outstanding high school career and is poised to add to that this season. He’s a leader for an Orchard Lake St. Mary’s squad that is one of the favorites to compete for a state championship.
Roper is an impressive all around basketball player. He’s a prolific and dynamic scorer, but his game is way more than just that. In fact, Roper could probably get 25 a night, but he puts more emphasis on winning games and being the best that he and his team can be. Unselfish to the core, he knows when and where to get his shots. And when he gets them, he delivers. Possibly the best part of Roper’s game is the fact that he’s a game changer on the defensive end as well. He’s one of the best on ball perimeter defenders in the state of Michigan. His physicality and mental and physical toughness stands out on that end of the floor.
Julian Roper Julian Roper 6'4" | PG St. Mary's Prep | 2021 State #137 Nation MI would be a very solid choice as the 2021 Michigan Mr. Basketball award winner. His team first approach and performance in the classroom would be a great legacy to leave with the award.
