I wanted to observe the top 8 three-point specialists in the conference and evaluate what makes them unique as perimeter gunslingers.
8) Daejon Gibson – Wareham – Soph. – G
What separates Gibson from many shooters on this list is his ability to convert threes off the dribble. The lefty point guard is a fantastic spot-up shooter but is an even bigger threat when the ball is in his hands, and he is the primary decision-maker. His dribble moves are so quick, and he breaks you down so easily that he can create ample space to pull-up and shoot from a distance.
7) Jacob Barreira – Seekonk – Sr – G
Barreira might be the fastest player in the South Coast Conference. The senior is a blur coming off of pin-down screens, and he is always looking to pull the trigger when he catches the ball. With the combination of his quickness coming off a pick and his teammates making the conscious effort to set excellent screens, Barreira gets many open looks. The floor general shooting off the dribble is impressive as well. He has the ball on a string at all times and can shake a defender with ease to create shots.
6) TJ D’Ambrosio – Dighton- Rehoboth – Sr – G
The 5’11” guard is deadly from the outside. D’Ambrosio makes a living torturing zone defenses on a nightly basis. With his quick release, the Dighton-Rehoboth senior needs little space to get the three-ball off and loves drilling corner threes. He is a perfect complement to a loaded lineup that includes three top 15 scorers in the South Coast Conference. This allows D’Ambrosio to find open space on the court and spot-up, ready to fire when the defense collapses on his teammates.
5) Alex Wright – Old Rochester – Sr – G
The senior guard is not shy to launch from the perimeter. Despite being undersized, he is very effective at hitting contested three pointers. His lightning quick release and ability to create separation with his dribble allows him to fire three-pointers at a high rate. I would not classify him as your classic sharpshooter where he is going to sit around the outside waiting for the ball to come to him to shoot. Wright has an aggressive scorer mentality who wants to beat you to the rim and get into an offensive rhythm before he steps out and showcases his skills from deep.
4) Sawyer Fox – Old Rochester – Soph.- G/F
The athletic wing is a towering presence who uses his 6’3” frame to rise above any defender and knock down the three ball. He is a hard player to guard because you want to respect his jump shot, but Fox can use his athleticism and quickness to drive by you, so the defenders have to pick their poison. He arguably has the quickest release in the league; so if he catches the defense napping when he is coming off screens or dribble handoffs, he will light it up from behind the arc.
3) Ryan Deslauriers – Fairhaven – Sr – F
What stands out about Deslauriers is his size. At 6’4”, he can shoot right over the defense with ease and can connect from 2-3 feet beyond the three-point line if you leave him open. Although the senior forward is an excellent creator of his offense, his movement off the ball is impressive. Fairhaven makes an effort to set multiple screens for Deslauriers, and he does a great job reading the defense to determine how he should use it. He is also extremely valuable in the pick and pop game with Fairhaven point guard Connor Rose. Rose’s ability to draw the defense results in Deslauriers getting clean looks.
2) Aaron Cote – Wareham – Fr – G
Cote is the ultimate corner three specialist. The freshman kicked off his varsity career on fire, nailing 5 threes against Dighton-Rehoboth and made them pay for not closing out to him on his attempts from downtown. Many teams in the South Coast League play many possessions in a zone defensive set, which plays to Cote’s strength as a spot-up shooter. With Daejon Gibson being the catalyst for shot creation, Cote has comfortably found his niche in the Wareham offense as the long-range sniper.
1) Joe Nugent – Somerset Berkley – Soph – F
The 6’6” forward is not just the league leader in three-point field goals, but he is arguably the best player in the South Shore League. Over Somerset Berkley’s 5 games thus far, Nugent is averaging 4.6 threes a game! He’s known for his highlight dunks, but his jumper is a thing of beauty. The left-handed sophomore can shoot off the dribble, spot up, pull up in transition, and even has a smooth step-back three-point jumper in his arsenal. The confidence Nugent has shooting the ball should have him in the driver’s seat for the three-point crown this season.
