Continue ReadingOver the last month, the recruiting news has been at an all-time low. Much of which has to do with college programs investing their focus on their current season and the hula hoops they have to jump through with COVID restrictions. Prospects are still not allowed to take official visits, which is another reason for the slower news cycle. Over the last few weeks however, there have been sporadic commitments and offers that we’ll headline in this week’s recruiting report.
COMMITMENTS
Yale received the commitment from 2021 Good Counsel/ DC Premier guard Bez Mbeng Bez Mbeng 6'3" | CG Good Counsel | 2021 State #190 Nation MD . Mbeng was the last available prospect in the top 10 of our 2021 MD/DC player rankings and the fact that Yale could reel him in is huge news. Mbeng is a 6-foot-3 combo guard who has improved steadily throughout his high school career. He brings athleticism and length that contributes to his impact on both sides of the floor. His jumper has always been the biggest cause for concern in his game, but even that has become much improved over the calendar year. Mbeng was focused on getting a high-academic program to offer him and Yale fits that bill perfectly considering they’re an Ivy League school.
2021 St. Maria Goretti/Global Squad guard Vincent Payne Vincent Payne 6'2" | CG St. Maria Goretti | 2021 State MD announced his commitment to Randolph Macon. Payne was one of the prospects in the area who created significant buzz and started catching the eyes of Division II programs. The Yellow Jackets are an elite Division III team who look to stay that way with the addition of Payne, a 6-foot-2 guard who can shoot from three and comes with high basketball IQ. The fit for both sides seems perfect and I’d expect Payne to have a productive college career with the decision he made.
2021 Springdale Prep center Detwan Montague Detwan Montague 6'8" | C Springdale Prep | 2021 State MD announced his commitment to Bowie State. Montague formerly attended St. Frances and Milford Mill before transferring to Springdale Prep for his senior year. At 6-foot-7, he’s a bit undersized for his position and will need to polish his overall game before expecting to have a big impact for the Bulldogs. One thing is certain with Montague and that is he’ll work extremely hard and is willing to accept tough coaching.
OFFERS
2022 John Carroll guard Tyson Commander Tyson Commander 6'4" | SG The John Carroll School | 2022 State #203 Nation MD received an offer from Iona head coach Rick Pitino earlier this week. Commander is nearing 6-foot-4 with one of the best three-point shots you’ll find in MD/DC regardless of class. His improved athleticism had many (including myself) intrigued with how his game has expanded since his sophomore season. Commander currently holds 10 offers in total and continues to gain attention from high major programs.
