Yesterday had the action we are all used to seeing from before quarantine, and although the players had masks, they still performed to the same level that’s worth taking a second look at. Today, we take a look at some of the top guards and wings from Friday’s slate of varsity MIAA games.
Cody Dicken | Hopedale
A point guard out of Hopedale, Dicken, unfortunately, took the loss today against Nipmuc, but his performance was terrific. Dicken was able to put the offense in his hands, with him being able to control both the pace of the game and the pressure on the defense. When Dicken saw an opening to the rim, he made no mistake in taking it, and his off-ball spacing shows he knows exactly what to do when someone else is handling the ball.
Tate Pike | Bellingham
Tate Pike clearly was in command this game for Bellingham. He started off the game with the ball in his hands and it was clear he knew what to do with it. All game he has been showing off a good passing eye which is able to zip passes to his teammates quickly and effectively. His long-distance shot truly is long and very much helps his team, and he is able to cash in on specialty shots, such as a one-legged fadeaway he demonstrated today.
Seamus Maher | Scituate
Seamus Maher was simply a great shooter on Friday. Yes, the live stream camera was far up above the court, but Maher’s form was so solid that the camera was still able to pick up its rotation. Maher kept his confidence up and was able to keep firing once he had the opening, and it was his shots that really contributed to his game against Pembroke.
Steven Marchionni | Hopedale
Steven Marchionni was a great shooter Friday night. He wouldn’t shy away from open looks and even mustered up the bravery to shoot with defenders closing out or from a couple of steps outside of the perimeter. However, the thing that impressed me the most was his willingness to make entry passes. Marchionni showed no fear and conviction when he would rocket passes to the interior, which would put his team in a great position for success.
Ethan Schwartz | Ludlow
Ethan Schwartz showed conviction today on the fastbreak. There’s a reason speed is so valuable in basketball, and it looks like Schwartz knew how to master it. Once Schwartz or his team forced a turnover and secured a defensive rebound, the ball was thrown through to Schwartz, who turned on the burners and was an instant success to the basket.
Ross Priscella | Bellingham
Ross Priscella is only a freshman and with the delayed season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he’s barely had a taste of varsity action. Even with that being the case, Priscella has still stood out on the court for Bellingham. Priscella has brought youthful and speedy energy onto the court which instantly gives him an advantage, and his shot is perfect for only being a freshman in varsity.
Timmy Dillon | Dover-Sherborn
Dillon had the skills any guard needs. Dillon was a great shooter Friday night, with him knocking down shots both off a quick release catch-and-shoot or in traffic. Dillon was also exceptional at getting to the rim, with him able to get to the rim and score, especially on an early baseline drive which was instrumental for his team.
